(AUG 1) You would think that someone just announced that the sky is falling,
when you go to various online news sources who have written
emotionally-charged articles about the Lucia Rijker vs. Christy Martin bout
that was cancelled due to Rijker getting an “injury”, and the fact that
ticket sales were slow.
One writer on an online boxing site, wrote an article on the premise of
“Does anyone Care” that the fight was canceled. It was obvious from reading
this article that this particular writer had little interest in women’s
boxing, and having the power of the pen took a jab at the sport. This same
writer even talked about seeing the promoter, Bob Arum after the
cancellation of the fight and that Arum did not have the “look of a
crestfallen business man” ---wow, now that is an amazing observation….he
must be psychic.
Then we have the over reactor writers who talk about how this one over-due
fight would or could impact the sport of women’s boxing----oh my
goodness---the sky is truly falling.
I will not bore boxing fans with the many articles and/or comments, who have
taken this opportunity to take their own jabs on the sport because of one
fight being cancelled.
I will say for the record, that this sport is not based on one fight—it
never will be based on one fight that will make or break it.
This sport has proven that it has continued to grow, and will continue to
grow within the amateur and pro ranks.
So chill out media---it is not the end of the world that the Rijker-Martin
fight was cancelled, or that Rijker and Martin should have fought years ago.
The sport will weather through this so-called storm. The sky is not falling.
