(SEPT 17) On Saturday, September 15th,
Jizelle Salandy, 152, of Trinidad, stopped Elizabeth Mooney,
154, of the
United States, by TKO in the eighth round. The fight took place in
San Fernando, Trinidad and Tobago.
WBAN received some details of this bout in which it was reported
that Mooney came out very aggressively in the first round to take
control of the fight with some combinations of her own; uppercuts,
jabs and some to the body, but Salandy would not have any of that.
Salandy came to the center of the ring where she started to settle
and throw combinations of her own to the midsection and Mooney’s
head. After, Salandy took control with several punches about the
body. That pattern continued right through to the fourth round. She
then continued the control with good body shots and straight rights.
She staggered Mooney in the sixth and seventh round and Mooney quit
the fight in the eighth round, giving Salandy the victory.
According to this source, Salandy has created history for her native
homeland Trinidad and Tobago, by being the first female boxer to
unify the two world titles and being the first boxer in the history
of West Indies to win these two titles under the same umbrella.
Salandy does a lot of community work by way of helping the needy in
her homeland. She is also a very spiritual person in planning to use
her two titles to inspire the youths of her nation to get involved
in sports, walk away from a life of crime, to excel in whatever they
do, be it academics, sports, trade, or anything skill wise. Salandy
said feeding the poor inspired her to know that she was fighting for
them and poverty and crime are situations she would like to see
eradicated,” added Potts.
When asked how she felt after fight, whilst being very emotional and
tearful, she was quick to thank her Prime Minister, Patrick Manning,
her Minister of Sports, Roger Boynes, her Minister of Community
Development, Culture and Gender Affairs, Ms. Joan Yuille-Williams,
and her dynamics Sports Director, Mr. Paul Newallo, who is always
ready and willing to give good advice and lend a helping hand.
Mr. Potts said when we approached the Ministry of Sports with this
proposal three months ago, the Ministry along with his sport
director, was quick to jump on board and pledged almost a hundred
thousand dollars for these two titles saying that this is good for
the country and is worth the investment. Boxu Potts said that sports
has excelled under Minister Boynes in a positive way. It is either
he is an obeah man, very lucky, or a hardworking Minister. Whatever
it is, sports is going in a positive direction under his
stewardship.
Jizelle said she is going to rest for two days then go back to the
gym on Tuesday. When asked why so soon, she said the only thing I
fear in boxing is to lose my condition. She said she realizes boxing
is serious business. It is a hurting sport and you have to keep
yourself in the best condition if you intend to do justice for
yourself and represent your nation.
(WBAN's ranking for Salandy is #11; Mooney #12)
Also on the undercard, Scroller
Carrington, 172, won on points over Chico (Margaret) Walcott,
175. The bout was six rounds.
