(JUN 26) Yesterday, WBAN received a
statement
from Bonnie Canino, of Team Reis about the fight that took place
between Teresa Perozzi, of Bermuda vs. Yvonne Reis, of Florida,
U.S.A. WBAN has received a response from Victor Richmond, of
the Bermuda Boxing Commission. Richmond said the following:
(1) Yes, the weigh-in was sheduled for 10.00am on Friday June 22nd
in order to get maximum media exposure for the fight. Never at any
time did Ms Canino or Yvonne Reis express any concerns about or
objections to the time of the weigh-in! Why is she complaining after
the fact?
(2) At the weigh in and after the boxers had stepped on the scales I
ASKED Ms CANINO IF SHE WANTED PEROZZI TO WEIGH IN AGAIN THE
FOLLOWING MORNING. BOTH SHE AND YVONNE REIS SAID NO AND THAT
EVERYTHING IS FINE.
(3) Yes, one of the scheduled Judges, who had been in the arena
earlier, was missing when fight time arrived. As I was explaining
this to the boxers and their trainers a man volunteered to judge the
fight. Rather than discuss the matter in front of the boxers I spoke
to the man in private. I ascertained that he had no experience in
judging professional boxing matches. His expertise was in the
Martial Arts. Rather than cancel the fight for want of a third Judge
I decided to take up that position. I, like the other Judges, have
years of experience in judging professional boxing (including the
James "Bonecrusher" Smith v Jesse Ferguson fight, Troy Darrell &
Quinn Paynter (both Bermudian and WHO LOST POINTS DECISIONS IN THEIR
HOMELAND) and Teresa Perozzi fights in Bermuda. Incidentally,
Teresa's two losses were both on home soil!
(4) Ms. Canino was permitted to check the Judges' Scorecards after
the fight. She protested that a Judge could not judge a round 10-10
and made some inane comment that the only way you could score a
ROUND even was if each boxer won three Rounds! I told her that she
was totally wrong and asked her to check the Professional Boxing
Scoring Rules and demanded that after doing so she offer an apology
to both myself and the Bermuda Boxing Commission for her lack of
knowledge. Later that evening, I printed from the internet a copy of
the Rules (which clearly state, "If a knockout or disqualification
does not occur, the fight must go to the scorecards. Professional
fights have three judges each, and each of the judges must use the
10 point must system: Under this system, each time a boxer wins a
round in the judges' eyes, the judge gives that boxer 10 points, and
the other 9 or less. IF THE JUDGE DEEMS THE ROUND A TIE, HE OR SHE
MAY SCORE IT 10-10. When the fight reaches the scheduled distance,
all scores are added, round by round, to determine who won on each
judges' cards." On Sunday morning I went to Ms Canino's guest house
to give her a printout of the Rules but, unfortunately, she and
Yvonne had already checked out of the premises.
Hopefully, this response to Ms Canino's allegations will reveal to
the boxing public that she chooses her words to suit herself and
does not give the "whole truth', and that her knowledge of the
professional boxing scoring system is inadequate for someone in her
position.
Yours truthfully and sincerely,
Victor Richmond,
Bermuda Boxing Commission.
