Two very different personalities, who
share the passion for boxing, will meet in the ring at the next Team
Palle show in Horsens, Denmark. Vinni Skovgaard, who ended a very
successful amateur career in 2006 as reigning European Champion,
will be fighting Russian born Angel McKenzie from London. The bout
will be fought in the Light Welterweight division over 6 rounds
Vinni Skovgaard is known as a very determined boxer, who refuses to
compromise on her physical and mental training. She is in the sport
to win, and makes great demands on herself as well as the people she
works with. And she absolutely hates to loose. The proof, that her
focus and hard work in the amateur years paid off, can be seen in
her trophy cabinet, which holds 4 Gold Medals from the Danish
Championships, 3 Scandinavian Gold Medals, 1 EU Gold Medal and her 2
most treasured Gold Medals won at the European Championships in 2004
and 2006.
Skovgaard turned pro at the beginning of 2007, and has merely tested
the waters in the pro game so far. Her present 2-0-0 record, was
achieved in February and March this year. Judging by Vinni’s
ambitions as an amateur, she will not be content, just being part of
the game, but, no doubt, has her eyes set on title belts.
WBAN had the pleasure of a brief conversation with Vinni Skovgaard,
in which she shared some of her experiences of her first year as a
pro. Her day to day life is unchanged in many respects.
She has
continued her job as a Sales Consultant with a cell phone company,
and she still trains at her old amateur club in Aarhus, under the
tutelage of her trainer Ivor de Lima. Vinni expressed great
satisfaction with the co-operation with her manager, Hans Henrik
Palm, who has gathered his knowledge on boxing both outside and
inside the ring.
Asked how it felt, only to fight twice in a period
of 8 months (Vinni had approx. 20 bouts within her last 12 month as
an amateur) she told WBAN , that the low number of pro shows in
Denmark this year had been slightly frustrating, but she was hopeful
that things would pick up from now on.
There were negotiations for a
number of fights outside Denmark during the spring and summer, but
unfortunately they all fell through. However, the prospect of
upcoming fights, even though they never materialised, kept her
focused on her training, which has helped her stay in good shape
throughout the summer. Vinni expects she will be able to fight 5-6
times a year, which suits her just fine.
Vinni Skovgaard’s opponent in the upcoming fight, Angel McKenzie
(2-3-0) from London, is a very colourful and versatile person,
judging by her web site. Her love for art does not limit itself to
“The Noble Art”. She also spend her time playing/composing music,
painting, sculpturing and photography. Vinni and Angel are not
complete strangers. While Vinni was still in the amateur ranks,
Angel traveled to Denmark, for a weekend's sparring with her - no
doubt to mutual benefit. But on 14th September, it is strictly
business for both fighters.
