On September 1st, four weeks after his
last boxing show, Juergen Lutz, the man who discovered the female
boxing legend Regina Halmich, presented another female boxing
contest in Karlsruhe, Germany. As before, the show was an open-air
event, presented by Regina Halmich and as before most matches were
sparring fights.
The audience on the Europaplatz could watch four
regular fights in which German boxers encountered French fighters.
One could not help though, but be surprised at some of the outcomes.
In super flyweight class Pia Mazelanik (4-2-1) found herself up to
Loret Ikufu. The smaller fighter Ikufu threw more punches and put
her opponent under pressure right from the start. Mazelanik, in
turn, found her pace only late but then managed to land the harder
punches. She was declared the winner on points. A draw would have
been a fairer result.
The match between Stefanie Penkwitt (12-1-0) and Lucy Mairot took a
similar course. Penkwitt was technically the better boxer, but had
difficulties coping with the energy and willpower of the French
flyweight Mairot. Penkwitt landed the harder punches but she was too
passive and she paused too often and too long, which got her into
trouble more than once. After four rounds she was declared the
winner, a decision that was booed by the crowd. Again, a draw would
have been a more suitable result.
In contrast, the draw which Lena Ersahin
(2-1-0) got away with was a bizarre decision. The featherweight
Ersahin was clearly inferior to the much taller Keninde Obarek.
Again and again Ersahin went into yet another clinch with her
opponent and got just another beating. At the end of the fight the
lump on her forehead, the bruises and swelling around her cheekbones
and a black eye made it quite clear who had taken the beating in
this fight.
The only match whose outcome was
entirely undisputed was the fight between Özlem Asiye Sahin (1-0-0)
und Elsa Capell. To take on the much taller Capell, Sahin, whose
actual division is light flyweight, had to go up a weight class.
Sahin completely dictated the match from start to finish
demonstrating the technical deficits of her opponent. In the second
and third round the much smaller Sahin almost knocked Capell out,
but the tough and strong-minded French fighter managed to remain on
her feet. It will be fascinating to watch the further professional
development of Sahin, who is at the beginning of her career. Anyway,
it does not seem too early to say that she is one of the biggest
talents of female boxing in Germany.
