(SEPT 25) On Saturday night (Sept. 22),
a full house was on hand at the Tampa Letter Carriers Building where
West Tampa Boxing Club hosted one of the best amateur boxing shows
in years - “Giving kids a fighting chance”.
Over 300+ fans were treated to 25 action packed bouts. All were
filled with excitement, but the most technical and exciting bout of
the night came in the second bout - female showdown between Palm Bay
Light middleweight/154 lbs, Tia “TNT” Daniels (State Champion and
nationally ranked #4- Amateur) and Orlando, Amelia Newton,
Middleweight/165 lbs (also nationally ranked #4-Amateur). This was
the only female bout of the evening.
Tia entered the ring at 151 pounds to
Amelia 156 pounds. Although only a few pounds difference, this was
an action packed bout that electrified women’s boxing.
Tia got off to a good start by setting the pace and being the busier
boxer throwing jabs, compact combinations and using perfect angles
to confuse her opponent.
Throughout the bout, the fans would cheer wildly every time Tia
connected her “TNT” straight-left hand - her trade mark /signature
punch.
In round one. Tia quickly went to work establishing her jab and
displaying her trade mark and keeping her foe at bay and setting the
tempo. Amelia seems very tentative looking to get inside to work the
body, however, Tia’s Jab and slick move would not allow Amelia
unleash. Amelia unleashed a soft jab but failed to reach her target.
Tia kept the pressure and circled to her left catching Amelia with a
hook that ended the round.
Round two - Round two saw some good back and forth action with
Amelia coming out swinging trying to pile up the points and making
it a brawl. In several occasions, Amelia would come in with her head
down, allowing Tia to connect with devastating right upper cuts.
Amelia aggressive style and quick flurries allowed her to take a
slight lead. This was Amelia’s best round, making it an
entertainment and competitive bout.
Round three – In the third round, Tia continued picking up the pace
and searching for the stoppage, delivering barrages of punches
constantly keeping her foe backing up, however, Amelia was determine
to stay in the fight.
As the bout went on, Amelia seems to tire at times, and when she
tired she was unable to move her head and throw punches. Despite
being pushed and urged by her coach to keep throwing, Amelia wasn’t
able to stay busy enough to take the round.
Tia proved to be the busier boxer and clearly the stronger puncher,
countering most of the punches being unleashed by Amelia. Tia’s
dazzling defensive style, made it very difficult for Amelia to hit
Tia with flurries or body shots.
Round four - Tia controlled the final round with speed, accuracy,
and defensive skills. Both boxers then brawled with Tia clearly
getting the better of Amelia. Tia constantly connected with
two-three piece combinations that had the crowd on their feet
throughout the bout. The fans appreciated Tia’s slick boxing,
technical style and footwork.
Amelia showed plenty of heart, but
struggled to connect meaningful punches, landing few flurries at the
end of the bell. Tia “TNT” Daniels won the four-round majority
decision victory. “TNT” Daniels has clearly built a faithful
following.
