(OCT 4) German boxing fans who are
interested in those events not organized by one of the big promoters
sometimes have to seek out strange places. This Sunday, for example,
a martial arts evening took place in the Blautal Centre Forum, a
shopping centre in the city of Ulm. There were only handfuls of
seats but the audience patiently stood at all three levels of the
shopping centre to watch the eight Thai boxing fights and three
professional boxing matches.
Rayong Sports, the local fitness club
had arranged the event. All but one Thai boxing match were part of a
middleweight tournament. The finale showed Denis Scheidmiller from
Hamburg defeating the favorite Marco Pique from Amsterdam in a
dramatic fight that ended in a draw and therefore had to be decided
in extra time.
In the first of three female boxing
matches Ozlem Asiye Sahin (2-0-0), who again ventured into the next
higher weight class, junior flyweight, took on the Bulgarian Albena
Atseva (0-8-0).
In the first round “Sugar” Sahin
dominated her opponent at will. The second round she cornered the
Bulgarian and showered her with a series of hard punches that seemed
endless. After what seemed hours, the referee took mercy and called
the match off, Atseva having long ceased even trying to defend
herself. The further development of Ozlem “Sugar” Sahin will be
interesting to watch.
In the second fight in junior
welterweight, Kira Schuerer (6-0-0) looked the sure winner for the
first two rounds, although almost always her jab came from the
inside and she neglected her guard throughout the whole fight.
In round three and four her opponent,
the Bulgarian Monica Penkakova (4-8-0), became stronger and ever so
often managed to land her right hook on Schuerer.
The judges nevertheless granted the victory to the German (40-36,
39-37, 39-38), a decision which was heartily and loudly doubted by
the audience.
The third fight between Rola El Halabi
(2-0-0) and Galina Gunliiska (8-10-0), another Bulgarian fighter,
left no doubts about the winner. El Halabi won all of the ten
rounds, a decision both the judges and the audience agreed on and
that won her the up to then vacant continental title of WIBF in
lightweight. The local favorite El Halabi dominated
her opponent both physically and technically. On the other hand the
fight proved also that she does not know yet how to use this
superiority to end a match within the distance. But then, at 22, she
has plenty of time to mature.
