(NOV 17) Negotiations are already
underway, according to Major Lee of the WBC governing body, for
a return match on neutral ground between former WBC Super
Flyweight Champion Ana María Torres of Mexico and Myung Ok Ryu
of North Korea, who was awarded the title on a split decision in
Gaeseong City (N. Korea) on the 19th October.
Torres had hoped, in view of the
fact that the first fight was on her opponent's home turf, that
any rematch would be in Mexico, but the talk at the moment is of
South Korea - perhaps because a live telecast there of the first
fight drew huge ratings.
Whilst Lee, who was the fight
supervisor on that occasion, would only concede that the fight
had been 'very close', the Thai judge, Anek Hongtongkam, who
scored it 96-93 in Torres's favour, was adamant yesterday that
his decision was correct, and he had powerful support from WBC
President José Sulaimán Chagnón,
who stated: "There's no doubt about it: the Mexican girl won".
In the interests of fairness, it
should be pointed out that Dr Sulaimán is himself Mexican.
Visitors to the
Box Latino
site can in any case judge the matter for themselves.
