(DEC 8) Last night
at the Shaw Conference Centre, in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada,
Domingo Olivo, of Monticello, New York, now 5-2-1 (0KO),
fought Jelena Mrdjenovich of Edmonton, 21-2-1 (11KO), to a
10-round draw. Mrdjenovich was defending her super featherweight
WBC world title belt against Olivo. Final judges scores were 96-94
for Mrdjenovich, 96-94 for Olivo, and 95-95.
Olivo, who apparently plans to be a “warrior” in the sport (more
power to her, we need more of her in the sport) fought in
Mrdjenovich’s home turf, and pulled off a draw with the much more
experienced fighter and world champion.
In the Edmonton Journal Olivo was quoted as saying before the fight
that she would be bringing Mrdjenovich a surprise---Olivo most
certainly did.
Mrdjenovich was quoted in a post fight interview in the Edmonton
Journal, “I really don't understand these judges. I outboxed her,
out-countered her, I had better defence, better offence. When I
heard those scores I was shocked. It's almost like the judges expect
me to come out strong and when I change my style a bit I get
penalized for it."
Mrdjjenovich is not the first world champion that Olivo has taken on
early in her boxing career. She fought world champion Layla
McCarter in June of 2007, and lost to a majority decision.
McCarter came into that fight with over 40 pro bouts on her record.
