(APR 15) ‘Girl Ten’ was more woman than
the ‘Lioness of Chascomús’ could handle when the two met in Rio
Gallegos in the early hours of Saturday morning. “Dominating
intelligently from the counterpunch, she drew blood as early as the
first round” (writes Ismael Tebez) “and finished in style in the
sixth” when, with only 40 seconds to hold out, (as La Opinión
Austral puzzlingly put it) “the woman from Buenos Aires threw
in the towel”.
It’s belts, of course, not bath linen
that interest the modern girl, but if the gift was not quite what
she’d have chosen, ‘La Chica Diez’ (Claudia López) hid well her
disappointment, describing this as her “best win ever”; after all,
her opponent, Silvia Fernanda Zacarías, not only outweighed her –
López fights normally at junior featherweight, Zacarías at
lightweight or above – but (after an impressive career as an
amateur) had gone the distance with Duda Yankovich (now ranked fifth
at junior welter) in only her first professional fight.
Having made
WBC champion Alejandra Oliveras sweat blood for a split decision 16
months ago and lost only narrowly to WBA champion Marcela Acuña in
October last year, López must fancy rotten her chances now against
either. It’s a rematch with the latter – far from impressive in her
last outing – that´s being mooted; and, whilst it’s unlikely she’d
reduce the roar of the Tigress to the same stifled whimper, Lopez’s
triumph over Zacarías invites the supposition that, if she and Acuña
were to fight a second time, the decision would go the other way.
