(JUNE 17) Sarah Kuhn, 144.5,
Albany, ranked #12 by BoxRec, added a respectable name to her
win column by scoring a majority decision over Adelita Irizarry,
145, Hartford, ranked #7 by BoxRec, in a closely contested six
round bout at Ares Promotions Fight Night IX.
It was a tale of two fights. Kuhn, who needs room to punch,
fought well off of her back foot and connected with stiff jabs
and right crosses from long range in rounds one, four, and five.
Kuhn evaded Irizarry’s attacks by moving away forcing the slower
footed Irizarry to follow her.
Irizarry, who needs to set her feet to punch, crowded Kuhn and
scored well with power punches in rounds three and six. Round
two was the key to the fight. In the early stages of the second
round, with momentum from her success in round one, Kuhn scored
well with her two-fisted attack from long range. The second
portion of the round, especially the last ten seconds, belonged
to Irizarry who smothered Kuhn in the corners and on the ropes
giving more than she received.
In the end, two of the assigned judges scored for Kuhn 58-56.
The single holdout had it even at 57-57. This author scored
58-57 for Kuhn. With the win, Sarah Kuhn raises her record to
5-2-1 whereas Adelita Irizarry drops to a deceiving 8-6 with the
loss.
NOTE: This was the best received fight of the night by the
nearly 2,000 boxing fans gathered at the Empire State Plaza in
downtown Albany. Irizarry had an estimated fifty followers all
the way from Hartford loudly applauding her efforts. As loud as
Irizarry’s fans were, they were generally drowned out by those
who came to see the hometown fighter.
‘Downtown’ Leona Brown, the former IFBA super bantamweight, and
WIBC bantamweight champion mingled with the crowd at ringside.
