(DEC 29) The awarding of a grant
of €10,000 to Ballina Boxing Club by the Coca Cola Thank You
Fund for the promotion of ladies boxing has been welcomed by
Fine Gael TD for Mayo, Deputy Michelle Mulherin. Deputy Mulherin
said the funding would help the club widen its appeal to women
boxers and would also be opening a fitness and training centre
on Mercy Road, Ballina, in September.

Deputy Mulherin
said, “I am delighted that Ballina Boxing Club has been awarded
€10,000 by the Coca Cola Thank You Fund in recognition of its
work in promoting an active lifestyle. The fund has paid out a
total of €125,000 in 2012 and the club is one of only 11
organisations across Ireland to have been recognised in this
way.”
“Ballina Boxing Club is one of the foremost clubs in Mayo. It
has a long history of training champion boxers who have brought
tournament success to the club from its earliest years up to the
present time. A number of its boxers have won national titles in
recent years.”
“To further enhance its reputation and to widen its appeal to
women boxers, the club has embarked on an ambitious development
programme. I have been working closely with the committee as it
implemented these plans and the highlight has been the opening
of the club’s fitness and training centre on Mercy Road in
September.”
Coca Cola Thank You Fund
“Coca Cola, the world’s most recognised brand, employs over
1,800 people in a number of locations in Ireland. It has a
presence in every county through its distribution network and is
a significant employer in Ballina.
"By setting up the Coca Cola Thank You Fund it is giving
something back to communities by recognising the worthwhile work
that is happening all over Ireland by awarding grants to
community groups.”
“I welcome this award and I congratulate Ballina Boxing Club on
its success. Boxers have done our country proud in international
competitions, most notably in the Olympic Games, where boxers
have won more medals than all other sports combined.
"The sport gave the country a lift during the summer as we were
transfixed by the success of Katie Taylor and her teammates at
London 2012.
"It is the dedication of the members, coaches and committees as
they work with future champions all over Ireland that make this
success possible and I would like to wish the boxers of Ballina
Boxing Club the very best in the future.”
