Alcivar pounded out an unanimous decision over Eileen Olszewski
to win the NY State Women's flyweight title as the main event on
Uprising Promotions initial six fight card, Wednesday night, at
the Five Star Event Center in Long Island City, Queens, NY, just
over the 59th Street Bridge from midtown Manhattan.
Alcivar was the aggressor from the opening bell as the veteran
Olszewski, who has been in with the top female flyweights in the
sport, attempted to use her formidable ring skills to keep the
new titleholder-to be at long range. But, continually throughout
the eight rounds, Alcivar found her target with left and right
hand flurries of punches. Olszewski had her moments, countering
with left hooks and straight right hands throughout the bout,
particularly in the second, fifth and eighth rounds. But it was
Alcivar who continually dictated the pace of the bout, always
coming forward, even undeterred by a cut on her forehead, a
result of a clash of heads in the second round. Referee Sparkle
Lee called a halt and summoned the ring doctor who, after a
close examination of the wound, allowed the bout to continue.
Alcivar paid little attention to the abrasion as the fight
continued the remaining six rounds.
The NY State flyweight title proved a "launching pad" for
current WBO flyweight champ, Melissa McMorrow, who this past
weekend, defended her world title with a ten round decision over
Nadia Raoui in Germany. Coincidentally, Morrow won the NY title
with a close eight round split decision over Olszewski in the
self same borough of Queen in June 2011. Alcivar's win was
somewhat more decisive, the scoreboards reading 79-73, 78-74,
77-75 and the win would seem to position Alcivar as a future
factor in the competitive flyweight class.
In a very. entertaining under-card bout, Canadian Jacqueline
Park won a close four round decision over local favorite Susan
Reno. Park, with a significant reach advantage, won the first
two rounds, keeping Reno on the end of an effective left jab.
But the New Yorker, with the crowd standing in support, stormed
back, winning the third round by a substantial margin. The final
round was two minutes of bell to bell action, give and take
rallies from both fighters, with the crowd at a fever pitch. One
judge (John Signorile) gave the round to Reno, while the other
two arbiters (John McKaie, Robin Taylor) favored Park. A case
could be made for all three calls. The final, four round, tally
favored Park 39-37 (2x) and 38-38. This was Park's first win as
a professional after two losses, while Reno is now 1-1. A third
scheduled female bout was dropped from the card when local
favorite, Jenifer Santiago's opponent failed the pre-fight
physical.
Uprising Promotion's maiden fight card unfurled before a
boisterous, SRO crowd at the cozy Five Star venue and seems to
portend well for boxing in New York City and, quite possibly, a
needed boost for Women's boxing in the biggest market in the
country.
