(SEPT 26) This week I spoke
with multi-world champion Ada "The Ace" Velez who has been one
of the most fierce warriors in the sport. I first
met Velez, when she took a fight in Austin, Texas, where she
fought Mary Ortega for a world title---and won.
Velez wanted WBAN and boxing fans to know the latest on a
potential fight offer that she recently received.
Velez told WBAN, "To those of you who do not know what is going
on 'really' between me and Marilyn Hernandez. I was
offered a purse that was only a third of what I had been offered
before with the same promoter on another card with another opponent. This
potential
fight offer was for a world title---AND going into my opponent's hometown."
"I lost two fights in a row, but I have had six prior wins,
winning the IBF and IBA world title belts, not having a loss
since 2007. My boxing record is 20-5-3 (6KO)."
"Being offered $2500 to fight a 10-round world title fight is
ridiculous. I do nothing for female boxing to take such a
low purse anywhere. I was offered more money to fight a
six-rounder with another fight offer and would have done it if
the opponent wasn't heavier than me."
"I have lost five fights in my whole boxing career that dates
back to 1999, and I always bounce back, and everyone knows that.
I cannot believe the disrespect that female boxers get in this
sport. I will fight Marilyn ANY DAY--I will fight ANY day
in fact-----but $2,500-hell no!"
"I want WBAN to put this out there, I am very tired of these
promoters that can get you a good match--but very little pay,"
added Velez.
