(SEPT 29) TAIPEI, Taiwan --
Taiwanese female boxer Chen Nien-chin yesterday defeated her
Chinese opponent 3-0 to win the 75kg weight category title match
at the AIBA Women's Youth & Junior World Championships held in
Bulgaria. It was the first time in Taiwan's history that a gold
medal was won in an international boxing tournament.
Her teammate, Lin Yuting, later
added another gold for Taiwan after beating her opponent from
Turkey in the 51kg category final late yesterday Taiwan time.
The gold medal has significantly enhanced the morale of other
team members, said Chen's coach Ceng Tze-chiang, speaking over
the phone.
Chen's speed and explosive force demonstrated in the tournament
have attracted the attention of boxers and coaches from other
countries.
Given that Chen only began her boxing training three years ago,
many foreign coaches have recognized Chen as a specially gifted
“genius” boxer.
Chen showed signs of nerves and was not at her best in the first
round, Ceng said. However, she regained confidence in the second
and her performance continued to improve in the third round,
resulting in her victory.
Chen grew up in Matsu Island and is currently studying in Year
11 at Hsinchu Municipal Cheng Te High School.
Before the completion, Chen aimed “to bring a gold medal back to
Taiwan.”
Although weighing less than 75 kilograms, she participated in
the 75kg category match. Despite her smaller size, Chen was
still able to outmatch her opponents, her coach said.
