(JAN 12) (RENO, NEV.) – The 2014 Junior and Youth Open concluded with 35 outstanding championship bouts at the Grand Sierra Resort in Reno, Nev., on Saturday afternoon. Final round competition was contested in all four age groups on the final day of tournament action in Reno.

Saturday’s final round action showcased a mixture of returning champions reclaiming gold medals and newcomers upsetting the sitting titlists. In the junior division, 2013 World Championships silver medalist Daniel Gonzalez (Moreno Valley, Calif.) won his second straight Junior Open title in junior men’s flyweight division with a unanimous decision over hometown boxer David Marfil (Sparks, Nev.)

Hometown boxer Ashley Perez (Sparks, Nev.) thrilled her family and friends in attendance with her second consecutive Junior Open championship. Perez took a 3-0 victory over Jessica Juarez (San Diego, Calif.) in their junior division flyweight contest to win the 2014 edition of the event.

Devin Haney (Las Vegas, Nev.) concluded an outstanding week of boxing with another unanimous decision win in the junior division featherweight championship bout. The 2013 Junior Open champion claimed a 3-0 win over Ryan Garcia (Adelanto, Calif.) in Saturday’s action to grab his second straight gold medal.

Suray Mahmutovic (Daly City, Calif.) was the fourth reigning champion to win another junior title, taking a 2-1 victory over Zachary Jones (Waipahu, Hawaii) in the junior division light heavyweight final round bout.

Victor Morales (Vancouver, Wash.) pulled an upset in his championship bout, winning a 3-0 decision over 2013 Junior Olympic National Champion Vergil Ortiz (Grand Prairie, Texas) in the bantamweight division bout. Morales was named the junior men’s outstanding boxer of the tournament for his performance in Reno.

On the women’s side, Diana Estrada (Hillsboro, Ore.) was chosen as the junior female outstanding boxer of the tournament following her 2-1 win over Kaely Perez (Victoria, Texas).

There were several outstanding bouts in the youth division in both men’s and women’s action. 2013 Junior Olympic National Champion Isidro Ochoa (Fresno, Calif.) earned his first national title in the youth division, winning a 2-1 decision over Andres Cortes (Henderson, Nev.).

2013 Junior Open titlist Javier Estrada (Palmdale, Calif.) took his second straight national title in Reno with a victory in the stacked youth men’s welterweight division. Estrada closed a highly competitive week with a split decision win over John Williams (Baton Rouge, La.) in final round action to take the gold medal.

2013 Junior Olympic national champion Charles Conwell (Cleveland, Ohio) earned his first youth division championship on Saturday as well. Conwell won a 3-0 decision over Junior Olympic silver medalist Manjaro Hills, Jr. (Baton Rouge, La.) in their final round bout to take the 2014 Junior and Youth title.

The youth men’s flyweight finale featured two of the top boxers in the tournament battling it out for one gold medal. 2013 Junior World Champion Shakur Stevenson (Newark, N.J.) took on 2013 USA Boxing youth national champion Antonio Vargas (Kissimmee, Fla.) for the men’s youth flyweight crown. The bout lived up to its hype with momentum swinging throughout the contest, but it was Stevenson taking the win on split decision. The 16-year-old was also named the outstanding boxer in the youth men’s division at the 2014 Junior and Youth Open.

Darmani Rock (Philadelphia, Pa.) won the final bout of the tournament, claiming a victory over 2013 USA Boxing youth national champion John Luna (Milwaukee, Wis.) in the super heavyweight title bout.

In women’s youth division competition, 2013 Junior World Champions Caitlin Orosco (Anaheim, Calif.) and Jajaira Gonzalez (Glendora, Calif.) both won gold medals in their respective weight divisions. The pair made successful transitions in to the youth division, taking the flyweight and lightweight division titles. Gonzalez was honored as the outstanding boxer in the youth women’s division for her performance in Reno.

Martha Fabela (Oakland, Calif.) took the title in the third women’s Olympic weight division, winning a second round TKO over Sarah Abernathy (Hokes Bluff, Ala.) in the middleweight finale.

Defending junior champion Iesha Kenney (Alexandria, Va.) made the move up to the light welterweight division for the 2014 event, but the jump in weight didn’t deter him from claiming another gold medal.

The 2014 event was the first edition of the Junior and Youth Open in its current format and the tournament results will play a role in determining the athletes that will represent the United States in international competition throughout the year.
