(FEB 7) The 'amateur' sport's
governing body ,International Boxing Association (AIBA) has just
announced the qualification process for the XXXI Olympiad in Rio
2016. As we already know sadly there will only be the same
three weights for women as in London 2012. That said be sure
that the WBAN Campaign for Equality will continue apace.
Fly (48-51kg)
Light (57-60kg)
Middle (69-75kg)
Again the process is a complicated one so let's take it 'step by
step':
Total Quota Places for Boxing: 286
Qualification Places: Men 240 Women 32
Tripartite Commission Invitation Places : Men 5 Women 3
Host Country Places: Men 5 Women 1
Total: Men 250 Women 36
Grand Totals: 286
Which then are the qualifying events then for women?
Basically the 2016 AIBA World Championships will have 4
qualifiers per weight with the balance made up of those who
qualify via their Continental Championships though numbers will
depend on which Continent and also the Americas will have either
1 or 2 athletes depending on whether or not host country Brazil
use one of their host nation invitations. The remaining places
(3) will be announced by the Tripartite Commission late
June/early July 2016.
An additional note reads:
WOMEN
- If an allocated quota place is not confirmed or is declined by
the NOC within the deadline after the 2016 AIBA Women’s World
Boxing Championships, the unused quota place will be reallocated
to the
next best ranked boxer, not yet qualified, in the same weight
category at the 2016 AIBA Women’s World Boxing Championships.
- If an allocated quota place is not confirmed or is declined by
the NOC within the deadline after the AIBA Women’s Continental
Olympic Qualifying Competitions, the unused quota place will be
reallocated to the next best ranked boxer, not yet qualified, in
the same weight category at the respective AIBA Women’s
Continental Olympic Qualifying Competition.
