(FEB 19) Last Saturday at
the B Street Gym in San Mateo, California, world champion "Mighty"
Melissa McMorrow had her last sparring session before she left
for Puebla, Mexico, in her anticipation to fight Mariana
"Barbie" Juarez on February 22, 2014.
Top heavyweight pro boxer Martha
Salazar and I met PAL and Beautiful Brawlers champion Jamie
Mitchell to work her corner against the tough McMorrow at this
time is
completely in fight mode!
McMorrow said, “This is
what they signed up for to come out here and spar with me and
when you spar me you are signing up to get hit.”
Jamie Mitchell who both Salazar
and I, consider to be one of the best amateurs in the game came
through for us and drove many miles out here to spar with
McMorrow.
Mitchell is "quality sparring"
and she brings it every time.
Mitchell is tricky, her foot work is incredible, and she has a very
aggressive style of boxing. What I like about Mitchell is that
she is mentally focused and
physically, in great condition. Mitchell really made a
difference with McMorrow’s sparring.
Another boxer, young USA Boxing silver medalist
in the youth Nationals, Odalys Camacho was more than willing to
come out, throw down and do the work necessary to help get
McMorrow ready.
“Camacho has come a long
way. I had the opportunity to be her second at the USA Boxing
youth nationals and she was impressive."
National champion
Marisol Lopez and she gave National Champion Caitlin Orosco a
run for her money losing a split decision in the championship
bout in Reno, NV.
She has about 40 amateur fights and has
come a long way.’ Camacho has the speed and stamina needed to
get that work in with McMorrow. Camacho and her coach “get it”.
Camacho is basically returning the favor since McMorrow gave her
sparring before the Youth Nationals but with that favor comes
experience working with the Flyweight world champion. It’s a
win-win situation for all of us involved.
After 5 - 3 minute rounds with Camacho and 6 very aggressive 3
minute rounds with Mitchell, we all hung out for a bit and
talked about the upcoming fight with Juarez.
Melissa McMorrow is smart and
experienced and knows what she needs to do to win this bout
against Juarez who is a pioneer in this sport. Camacho is young
but she has goals to be an Olympian, a Professional and a world
champion.
We love this little ones drive
and we are going to support her 1000% because she comes out and
is considered a big part of our team. Mitchell also shares goals
of Olympics and going pro one day. We absolutely want to support
Mitchell because we believe she is going to be one of the
biggest names in boxing. Mitchell is a mom and lives hundreds of
miles away. Odalys also lives hundreds of miles away but they
took the time out to help us out and we all love them for it. We
have a bond with each and other that is taking all of the boxers
to the next level. We don’t just consider these girls great
sparring, We consider them family.
Martha Salazar and I feel blessed to be a part of and see some
of the changes in boxing. Although many more changes need to be
made, we always give our best efforts in helping all of our
local professional and amateur women out. We love what we do and
we love our champion Melissa McMorrow.
Mariana Juarez will not have easy
work come February 22nd. I hope she is ready for what’s in store
for her. Flyweight World Champion Melissa McMorrow is going to
bring the fight to her, it will be a war. McMorrow knows to
win, she has to win decisively.
