It was a stressful week for promoter Chris Corpuz as his pro-am
show scheduled for last Saturday night at the White Swan
Pavilion in White Swan, Washington ran into problem after
problem. A show that was originally scheduled to showcase six
pro fights, three of them women's bouts, was scaled back as many
of the bouts fell apart. Still, the promoter pulled it together
and gave fans an exciting night of boxing. And as is the case in
most of Corpuz' cards the women were prominently featured with
three women's bouts.
Nakota Yallup
Two fighters well known to the local crowd squared off in an
entertaining three round amateur women's bout. Nakota Yallup
pitched a shutout over Jazmin Wong in a bout that was clearly
dominated by one, yet remained competitive throughout.
Both
fighters came out swinging from the start, stepping into the
pocket and unloading to the delight of the screaming fans. Yallup was the more accurate of the two, but Wong hung in there
and gamely traded with her taller opponent.
In the second round Yallup dropped Wong with a right hand and, after a count was
administered, went for the knockout, letting loose with
everything she had, yet Wong would not give in.
She stood her
ground and traded even as Yallup seemed to land everything she
threw. Both fighters would end the fight in the center of the
ring swinging away at each other. All three judges saw the fight
for Yallup with scores of 30-26 all around.
Toppenish, Washington's Lateet Olney was in action in a non-pro
bout, scoring a three round unanimous decision win against White
Swan's Janice Jim. Olney, who had not fought since losing her
first fight as a pro last January, came out throwing defense out
the window and unleashing a ferocious flurry from the second
that first bell rang. She swarmed her opponent, who was left on
the defensive, seemingly looking for the knockout. Jim proved to
be a tough competitor, though, as she survived the early
onslaught and managed to mount an attack of her own late in the
round.
In the second round Olney forced the issue and took control of
the bout with multiple flush combinations in close. She took
control of the tempo and proceeded to tee-off throughout the
remainder of the fight. Jim did prove to be a tough competitor,
fighting back enough to keep the bout from being stopped, but it
was all Olney for most of the three rounds. All three judges
scored the bout for Olney.
Young novice Lisa Olney claimed a unanimous decision win over
Teanna Adams. The fight was a competitive one with both fighters
bloodying each other and having their moments, but all three
judges favored the busier work rate of Olney.
The main event featured the lone pro bout of the night with
Randell Corpuz scoring a third round TKO over Ed Robinson.
Corpuz Promotions will be back in either May or June at the
Pavilion.
