(OCT 31) Yesterday at the
Mayweather gym I ran into two WBO Strawweight Champions from
Japan. Ikehara Si -Sa Kumiko (105 lb) and Ike Yama Nao
(102 lb). Nao and Kumiko were in Las Vegas for the
WBO Boxing Convention.
Usysses G. Sato, a
Matchmaker from Osaka, Japan, was interpreting for
me so I could ask Nao and Kumiko questions.
I was asked about how many fights in Las Vegas and the
U.S.A. for female boxers---and I told them that the the women's
boxing fan base has declined in Las Vegas and the USA, because
of the lack of activity. I told them that there are more fights
for women in Mexico and Europe.
I told them about Pepe Gomez, a
promoter in Mexico who features women on his cards and that
there are many women Champions and women in the lighter weight
classes.
I also explain that there are
some women's fights going on in some States but not enough to
build the fan base back up.
It seems that women boxers in Japan are having the same problems
getting on cards as they do in the United States.
Nao and Kumiko like all women boxers just want a chance to be
able to showcase their talent on more shows and have the
opportunity to fight on major promoters undercards.
Women Boxers in the U.S.A., Europe, South and Central America
all want the same thing----they want a chance to fight and be
accepted in this sport.
