(MAY 19)
The Irish team has six of its team still in this 2nd edition of
the AIBA World Youth and Juniors championships despite a
controversial defeat for Amy Broadhurst on Monday when most
experts (and not just the team and its coaches) felt she had won
every round against her Chinese opponent. That said, the judges
somehow managed to hand down a 2:1 split decision to the boxer
from neighbouring China. Tuesday was to prove a better day and
Irish eyes are smiling once more.
Former World Junior champion Ciara Ginty and Natasha Logan
turned on the style to advance at the AIBA World Youth and
Junior Championships in Taipei, Taiwan Tuesday.
The Geesala BC and St Brigid's (Edenderry) pair hammered out
unanimous decisions over Aida Abikeyeva (Kazakhstan) and Aliya
Valizada (Azerbaijan) in the light-welter and and bantam Youth
classes.
Abikeyeva, kept at bay by Ginty’s raking jab for almost the
entire four rounds, took two standing counts in the fourth and
final frame as the Olympic Youth silver medalist dropped home
two big rights.
All three judges scored the final stanza 10-8 to the Mayo ace.
Later Geesala coach Pat McDonagh told SportsNews Ireland:
".Ciara gave her opponent two standing counts in the last round
and I would say she was at 50% of her top form. She has trained
very hard and is very focused for this competition. We are
delighted with the win and we have a really tough opponent in
the next round in U.S boxer, Ariel Arimendez from
Tolleston,Texas.. But we are confident if she boxes up to her
potential she can do very well"
Logan was equally as impressive, the St Brigid's BC stand out
taking a 40-36 verdict across the board to book her ticket into
the quarter-finals.
Earlier in the day, Joanne Richards, a champion Irish dancer,
showed some slick footwork to guarantee Ireland at least one
bronze medal at the tournament.
The talented St Michael’s (New Ross) BC prospect comprehensively
beat Indian light-welter Shruti Yadav on a unanimous decision,
with one judge scoring all three rounds 10-8 to the Irish
champion.
Yadav, who was being tipped to win gold, started each round
aggressively, but the determined-looking Richards held her
composure and stood her ground to pick off clean and solid shots
to ensure that her country won’t be returning empty handed from
Asia.
Orla Garvey was also in action , but despite a typically brave
performance the Irish feather was beaten by Zhane Crockett of
the USA. The American team are doing very well at this
tournament.
Six Irish boxers – three Youths (Ginty,Logan and Aoife Burke)
and three Juniors (Leonard,Earley & O'Callaghan) – will be in
quarter-final action Wednesday.
Irish women’s boxing is proudly sponsored by Quick Park of
Dublin Airport.
