VIDEO: Seniesa Estrada on Roy Jones
Jr. Support & More!
Story
by Michele Chong
May 20, 2015
(MAY 20) During Monday's
Tim Bradley vs. Jessie Vargas kickoff press conference held at
the Conga Room in Los Angeles, Vargas' trainer Roy Jones Jr.
took his turn at the mic to share his thoughts about the
upcoming Bradley-Vargas fight. But in an impromptu moment, Roy
went off script a bit to tell us about a young pro fighter he
was very impressed with.
The WBU cruiserweight champ and
ring veteran told the audience about 22-year-old Seniesa
Estrada, who had just fought Saturday night on the Gennady
Golovkin-Willie Monroe Jr. card which aired live on HBO (with
Jones as a commentator). While Seniesa's bout with Carly Batey
was on the non-televised portion of the show, Jones said
everyone should see this girl fight. He asked Estrada to stand
up, telling the crowd at the presser: "You have to see this
girl. She can fight!"
In her match at the Forum,
Seniesa won by unanimous decision after trading punches and
matching wits with Batey in six two-minute rounds. And just two
days after her fight, she shares her thoughts with me about
meeting one of her longtime idols in Jones Jr., the impact of
this spur-of-the-moment shout out to her, and why more fans
should watch female fights.
Having this verbal shout out from the ring legend was a moment
Estrada will never forget. Women's boxing is always on the back
burner in the sport and the East L.A. puncher says she was
surprised and truly honored to have Roy Jones Jr. giving her
such a boost of support.
Jones Jr. told Seniesa that she thinks better than male boxers,
praised her job at cutting off the ring and finished by saying
he was proud of her.
She is buoyed by this burst of compliments brought forth by Roy.
Estrada, a former amateur star, now looks to have a busy year
and showing a strong stance in the pro fight game.
"I can box; I can bang," she says during our chat. Seniesa
knocked Batey down in Round 5 of their clash.
She is a fresh face in boxing and with Saturday's victory,
Estrada is hoping to continue to draw more fight fans into
watching women's boxing.
"If anyone can do it, she can," nodded Roy Jones Jr. while on
stage.
Check out my in-depth interview with the undefeated Seniesa
Estrada as she reveals her thoughts on hearing Roy Jones Jr.
vouch for her, what her return to the ring was like and why you
should follow her rising career!
