(MAY 24)
The World Boxing Federation (WBF) Women's Intercontinental
Welterweight title remains vacant, as a fight between local
favourite Esther Phiri and co-challenger Sandra Almeida from
South Africa ended in an unsatisfactory Technical Draw on Friday
night, May 22, in Lusaka, Zambia.
It was shaping up to be a terrific fight, with Almeida starting
strongly in the first round and Phiri coming back well to take
the second, when an accidental clash of heads in round three
left Almeida with a horrific gash above the left eye, making it
impossible for her to continue with bone being visible and blood
poring from the wound.
While the many fans in attendance were deeply disappointment
with the outcome, WBF President Howard Goldberg reports from
Lusaka that a rematch is already in early negotiations, and that
both Phiri, 14-1-3 (5), and reigning South African champion
Almeida, 6-4-2 (4), are eager to do it.
Promoter of the fight was Anthony Mwamba and his Exodus
Promotion.
