Katie Taylor has busy schedule ahead according to Promoter Eddie Hearn
by Michael O'Neill
September 2, 2017

(SEPT 2)   Matchroom boxing promoter Eddie Hearn has been talking about what the future of former Olympic Gold medallist Katie Taylor might look like in the coming months including a possible World title bout in Cardiff at the end of October. Intriguingly he also discussed a possible ‘’crossover’’ bout against Holly Holm.

Talking to the Irish media Friday, Hearn gave these possibilities for Taylor’s immediate future with her next opponent likely to be named within the next week.

According to Hearn, Katie will challenge for a World title in Wales at the ‘Millennium Stadium’ home of Welsh Rugby, next month, on Saturday, October 28th. This would be on the undercard of the Anthony Joshua v Bulgarian Kubrat Pulev World Heavyweight title bout.

The stadium has a ‘closed roof’ and though its normal capacity is some 74,500 this could extended to nearly 80,000 once additional seats are installed on the pitch.

Taylor as we previously reported was also on the undercard of the Joshua/Wladimir Klitschko sell out 90,000 crowd at Wembley Stadium earlier in the year.

Matchroom has both Joshua and Taylor on its books and thus Taylor is likely to feature and challenge for the WBA World Lightweight title.

Who might be her possible opponents? Irish boxing correspondent Sean McGoldrick believes her likely opponent will be an Argentinian. He writes:

“Two Argentinian fighters, Cecila Sofia Mena (10-1-1) and Anahi Esther Sanchez (16-2-0) fight for the vacant WBA belt in San Miguel, near Buenos Aires on Saturday night. Taylor, who has won her six professional bouts with consummate ease, is ranked number one by the WBA and also holds an international WBA title. She is likely to face the winner of the contest between Mena and Sanchez”.

Sky are also keen to promote Taylor again in the United States and should both she and Joshua win in Cardiff – assuming that those fights materialise as expected – then an early 2018 appearance in the U.S is one avenue being explored.

The previous talk was of Taylor making her first World title appearance in Dublin in either October or November but that now seems highly unlikely and instead a title fight in Dublin on or around 17th March (St Patrick’s Day) is being mooted.

Meantime Eddie Hearn also spoke with Ciaran Gallagher of Irish National Broadcaster RTÉ Sport and would not rule out a “crossover” fight for Taylor in the future. Here is how Gallagher reported that news :

‘’Eddie Hearn is keen to book a ‘crossover’ bout between Katie Taylor and the UFC’s former boxer Holly Holm, while the promoter has claimed he will negotiate a grudge fight between Leo Santa Cruz and Carl Frampton if the latter signs with his Matchroom outfit.

Following last weekend’s multi-million showdown between Floyd Mayweather and Conor McGregor, the promoter also claimed he is keen to set up a similar crossover fight between Taylor and former UFC world champion Holly Holm, who built a 33-2-3 record as a pro boxer – albeit at a higher weight than the Bray lightweight – before finding worldwide fame as an MMA fighter.

Speaking on the topic of Mayweather-McGregor, Hearn said: "It was a one off, a freak show. I’ve a lot of admiration for the way they done business and they made an absolute fortune. The best way I can describe it is, they got away with it.

"It broke all records on pay per view over here… They made a lot of money."

When quizzed about the prospect of staging a similar bout, the promoter suggested that Taylor-Holm is the only ‘crossover’ match-up he would like to book.

"If the money’s there, you can’t turn down things like that… You can never rule it out in the future, but there’s not one fighter that I have that I’m looking at [making a crossover fight with] other than Katie Taylor against Holly Holm," said Hearn.

"Holly Holm is a good boxer and she’s a lot better than many of the [current] female pro boxers out there and I think that’s a big fight."

So there you have it, a busy year ahead it seems for Katie Taylor. More news in the coming weeks and months.
