Mikaela Mayer Making A Difference and
Paving the Way
by Blanca Gutierrez
February 12, 2018
(FEB 12) This Sunday, on
February 12th was an amazing day for the female boxers who
showed up at the Beautiful Brawlers Sparring Camp hosted by Sacs
Finest Boxing Teams coach Sonya Hernaes at the Midtown Boxing
Gym in Sacramento, CA.
Olympian Mikaela Mayer showed up
and all the girls were excited. Mayer ran a warm up before the
sparring began and it was a very special experience for each and
every boxer and coach who participated.
Mayer is such a humble beautiful
person. She gave each and every boxer personal attention giving
them knowledge, sparring with some and lifting up everybody’s
spirit in the gym. All girls had some very good rounds of
sparring and there was that feeling in the gym that anything is
possible if you keep working hard to reach your goals.
After sparring Elite boxer, 132 lbs. Lupe Gutierrez, #1 ranked
JO 132 lbs. Daisy Bamburger and up and coming 165 lbs. Alexis
Gomez. We gathered together around the ring and Mikaela Mayer,
who is sponsored by Everlast handed each boxer a pair of
Everlast gloves. It was such a beautiful ending to a day where
each girl got to work out, learn and some spar with a boxer they
admire and aspire to be.
USA boxing has developed a wonderful program for the girl
boxers. The program has grown so much and Mikaela Mayer is proof
that the USA Boxing alumni have so much to offer. We have girls
who are 2020 Olympic hopefuls that have invested many years, and
money for equipment and travel to get to Nationals. To see that
Mikaela Mayer is an Olympian and now an undefeated professional
who is the first women signed with Top Rank is very empowering.
At Beautiful Brawlers Boxing we engage all female athletes to
participate at our sparring camps. We provide a safe place to
spar, get good work in and boxers get to work with seasoned
professional boxers and former WBC & WBO world champions, Martha
Salazar, Eliza Olson, Carina Moreno, Melissa McMorrow and now
Mikaela Mayer. Mikaela Mayer will be hosting a seminar at
Beautiful Brawlers Gym Babyface Boxing soon with the date TBA.
To all the women coaches, managers, professionals, who have been
doing so much for womens boxing, events like these make our
sacrifices so worth it. To see these girls re energized, focused
on their goals and excited is why we do this. It was and it
always will be about the girls.
The Beautiful Brawlers
In 2013, in a Flash of the Past, Mikaela Mayer
was WBAN's top picked for "Top Rising Star of the Year" with our
2013 WBAN Yearly awards. At the time we wrote the following:
"Keep your eye out on THIS amateur boxer! Mikaela Mayer, #1
with the AIBA,
64 kg, is not only a boxer to be reckoned with in the ring---but
she is also creating a stir outside the ring.
As one writer wrote about Mayer, "Mayer is
well-honed technically, with a crisp jab and a solid right hand,
and good footwork. She possesses the often elusive and
immeasurable traits that any successful boxer needs -- toughness
and grit, ring IQ, and the ability to adapt on the fly."
The lead-in to that writer's story on Mayer, " Is
Mikaela Mayer Destined to Become the New Face of Women's
Boxing?"
WBAN can answer that question without a moment's
thought: "Absolutely, Yes!"
In 2018, Mikaela Mayer has lived up to our prediction, and is
well on her way to be not to far in the future a world champion!
