Ava Knight Returns to the Ring April 7th at the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas!
by Blanca Gutierrez
April 3, 2018

(APRIL 3) On April 7, 2018, at the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada, Ava "Lady of Boxing" Knight, 14-2-4 (5KO), of Chico, California,  returns to the ring who will be facing Mayela Perez, 19-21-4 (10KO), of  Saltillo, Coahuila de Zaragoza, Mexico.

Knight last fought April 23, 2016 when she defeated Judith Rodriguez of Los Mochis, Mexico.  Ten of Knight's last 20 fights have been in Mexico because she has never had a USA opponent step up and fight her in the USA. This is part in due to the fact that USA Promotions had been unwilling to not only put women boxers on their cards but they were also not willing to pay them.

Mexico has a talented flyweight division and the WBC give their boxers huge opportunities and much better paydays and because of this former world champions Ava Knight and Mighty Melissa McMorrow would have to go to Mexico to get fights. As the tides are turning for women boxers in USA, we have veterans like Knight and McMorrow who have continued training and who are willing to fight the “new top USA flyweights” in the USA.

With Seniesa Estrada and Marlen Esparza signing with Golden Boy, there is now actually a platform that these flyweights can use to catapult female boxing to a new level. Ava Knight has been signed with May Weather Promotions which is a huge boost not only for Knight but also for the Flyweight division. This is the shot in the arm that the USA Flyweight division needed,---that is, in my opinion if the top boxers step up and fight each other.

Melissa McMorrow, another Veteran and former world champion flyweight needs to get back into the division and we have some very big fights on the horizon. I believe that Esparza and Estrada may not be ready to take on Ava Knight just yet but Mighty Melissa McMorrow vs. Ava Knight is the biggest fight to happen in this division, skill wise. If this fight actually takes place it should be on a big card in Las Vegas.

Estrada vs. Esparza also garners major attention but both are signed with Golden Boy. This fight should happen especially since the rivalry should bring about an explosive fight and lots of media attention. We honestly are tired of hearing all the hype in the interviews. Just fight and we can all see for ourselves who is the better boxer.

Casey Morton just won the WBO Asia Pacific Flyweight belt in Paranaque City, Philippines. An entertaining fight would be Poula Estrada versus Casey Morton, a fight that took place in the amateurs where Estrada won by UD but it was one of the best amateur fights we have seen a the Beautiful Brawlers Show in Pacifica Years back.

When you look at the USA flyweight division, we are finally on track to see some very talented boxers display the kind of talent we have been all waiting to see. Most of the best flyweights have been out of Mexico and now we have some boxers in the USA who we need to look at. Boxrec has them listed as such:

1. Seniesa Estrada, 2. Ebony Rivera 3. Casey Morton, 4. Poula Estrada 5. Marlen Esparza when you put Ava Knight and Melissa McMorrow back into that mix, we have a great USA Flyweight Tourney here.

I hope that the top 5 in this division, step up to the plate and use the platform that is before them to bring the Flyweight division in the USA to the forefront. If we do not see that now, we never will.
