Final - Report
by Michael O'Neill
March 18, 2019
(MAR 18) The 4th Edition of
the EUBC Under 22 Championships ended March 17th in Vladikavkaz,
Russia and as expected were dominated by the host nation who
once again topped the medal table.
The first edition of the EUBC European Confederation U22 Boxing
Championships was held in Kaliningrad, Russia in 2012. Following
a five years break, the competition was reorganized and returned
to the official AIBA boxing schedule in 2017 which edition was
hosted by a Romanian city, Braila.
Targu Jiu was the host of the U22
event in 2018 and for the very first time in the history of the
competition the ladies also attended the championships. The top
boxing nations of the continent, Russia, Ukraine, England,
Azerbaijan, France, Germany, Italy and Armenia all participated
with strong boxers. Twelve countries claimed at least one gold
medal in the 2018 edition which was a record for the history of
the continental event.
It was a Happy 22nd Birthday on St Patrick’s Day for Ireland’s
Amy Broadhurst who struck Gold in the 60kg weight class
overcoming the strong challenge of Italian no 1, Rebecca Nicoli
on a 4-1 decision on Sunday.
“Great win for Amy who has been outstanding throughout these
Championships,” said Irish team manager Stephen Molloy. “She can
now enjoy her birthday with team mate Niamh Earley whose
birthday was also today. Another gold medal for Amy, great day
for the Irish.”
Broadhurst won four fights at the tournament en route to the top
of the podium and her fifth European gold medal. In fact it was
her second successive European U/22 gold.
Nicoli, who was also aiming for successive gold – she won the
light-welter title at the European U/22s in 2018 – earned one
30-27 score in the all southpaw final, from the Bulgarian judge.
Broadhurst, whose accuracy and cleaner shots throughout the
three-rounder won the day, claimed four 29-28 scores to take the
60kg belt.
Irish coach Dmitry Dimitruk and coaching staff Philip Keogh and
Antia Just, hailed Broadhurst’s performance. The Dealgan BC won
four fights in Russia.
The emotional Irish Elite champion, who received a very sporting
congratulations from the Italian corner after her victory, said
she was ‘over the moon’.
Proud dad and Dealgan Head coach Tony Broadhurst said that it
doesn’t get much better for an Irish boxer than winning a major
European medal on Paddy’s Day.
Ireland, courtesy of Amy Broadhurst’s gold medal, finished in
9th spot in the medals table and 10th place in the rankings
table at the 34-nation European U/22 Championships in Russia.
Ireland used a ten-strong squad at the 4th edition of the
competition.
Four members of the squad, Irish male and female captains
Gabriel Dossen and Aoife O’Rourke, Paddy Donovan and David
Oliver Joyce were beaten by the eventual champions (all Russian)
– Aleksei Semykin, Vakhid Abbasov, Beslan Khamzaev and
Anastasiya Shamonova.
Russia topped the medals and rankings tables after winning 12
gold, 2 silver and a bronze. The host nation dominated the
tournament and claimed more titles than all other nations
combined.
We will bring you the EUBC Press Release detailing all the final
