EUBC European Junior Boxing Championships begin in Galati, Romania on Friday
by Michael O'Neill

(MAY 23)  The leading female – and male too – boxers from all over Europe have gathered in Galati, Romania for the opening ceremony and first session of this year’s tournament, which begins Friday.

The tournament venue is the Galati Ice Rink

Ireland, as usual, has sent a very strong squad and includes the majority of the Irish champions at this grade.

The team has undergone extensive training at the National Stadium in Dublin and the Dungarvan Boxing Club in County Waterford.

Current Irish champions Rachael Lawless and Eoghan Lavin will lead Team Ireland into battle in Galati.

Lawless and Lavin, a European Schoolboy silver medallist, are no strangers to be being there or thereabouts when Continental plaudits are being handed out as they both reached the quarter-finals at the 2018 European Juniors but were edged on split decisions.

Three-time Irish champion Lawless said it was a tremendous honour for her to be named Irish skipper and thanked her family, the Portlaoise BC and club coaches for their input into a career which has seen her secure a hat-trick of National titles.

Likewise with Lavin and the Ballyhaunis BC  teen believes the experience of competing at an International level will stand him and rest of the team in good stead at the 2019 edition of the tournament.

At least five Irish boxers will be in action at the European Juniors in Galati, on Friday.

Tiegan Farrell, Michael Donoghue, Robyn Kelly, Taylor Guiney and Thomas McDonnell get the show on the road for the boys and girls in green.

All five box in the early session on Friday.

Competition Period – May 24/June 1, 2019

Competition Venue – Patinoarul Galati (Iceskating Galati – Galati, Romania)

Age Classification – Junior M, Junior W

Weight Categories – 44-46 kg, 48 kg, 50 kg, 52 kg, 54 kg, 57 kg, 60 kg, 63 kg, 66 kg, 70 kg, 75 kg, 80 kg, 80+ kg.
