(OCT 5) Another fine win for
Ireland at today's 2019 AIBA Women's World's in Ulan-Ude,
Siberia when Cill na Martra's Christina Desmond gained a split
decision win over England star Sandy Ryan from Derby.
The Rebel southpaw, whose backhand repeatedly stung the Derby
orthodox, won the first round on the unofficial cards, and Ryan,
benefiting from a surprise public warning for slapping, claimed
the second.
However, Desmond, a former
European bronze medallist, put the 'foot on the gas' in the
final 30 seconds of a close bout to seal the victory and join
Ceire Smith in the last 16.
The final scores read 29-27 and 29-27 to Desmond and 29-27 to
Ryan and two 28-28, 28-28 scores but when it went back to the
judges that marked it even to select a winner they opted for
Desmond.
She’ll now meet Canada’s Myrian Da Silva next Wednesday. The
Quebec-native and Pan American finalist is the No. 5 seed in the
welter class in Ulan-Ude.
Meanwhile, Belfast feather Michaela Walsh, the No. 5 seed in
Ulan-Ude, meets Carmara Fatoumata (Mali) on Saturday.
Amy Broadhurst trades leather with Germany’s Maya Kleinhans on
Sunday.
This year's World's is NOT an Olympic qualifier but provides
valuable additional experience for all taking part as most of
the world's top boxers including Mary Kom are taking part.
Ireland's World Lightweight champion (60kg) Kellie Harrington
misses out as she has not recovered from the injury which forced
her to withdraw from the European Games final against now
favourite in Siberia, Mira Potkonen of Finland. Broadhurst
replaces Harrington for Team Ireland.
