(JAN 15) Over the last
couple of weeks, we have been watching a possible future fight
to happen between WBO Light Heavyweight Champion Geovana Peres
and the three-division world champion Claressa Shields.
On the third of January this year
Geovana Peres made it clear that her new year’s resolution is to
take on what’s arguably one of the best on women’s boxing. She
called out Claressa Shields on Facebook saying “Please Share!!!
Let's get this happening... Claressa Shields had responded
before the Lani Vs Geovana WBO World title fight put on by
(Rival Sports Promotions) that she would fight either of the
winners. Well time is now, team Pere's want the fight. Its 2020
let's make it happen.........”
Originally Claressa responded “Nothing but a word honestly,
let’s go”. However, Claressa had a title fight booked on the
10th of January and Claressa had a possible sport change to MMA
in the future, so there was doubt if this could ever happen. But
Claressa beat Ivana Habazin with easy and was ready to possibly
set up a fight with Geovana.
Geovana Peres replied to Claressa saying “when are you free?
April? May? You choose the date whenever you are free!” and
Claressa responded, “This year for sure just not those times.”
This is big news for Geovana as we have learnt two things here.
First that Geovana will be scheduled to defend her title in
March or April and that Claressa Shields has promised to take on
Geovana this year.
Now its time for us fans to do the hardest thing, wait and see
if this unfolds.
WBAN contacted Claressa Shields' team about this potential fight
on the horizon, and Mark Taffet, manager of Claressa Shields
said, "If Claressa wants to have a Geovana Peres in her plans we
will speak with her and build a plan. In the immediate future
there is history at 154 and 160 to address while her weight is
in these ranges, but if she wants to then reverse trend and gain
multiple division world titles at higher weights like superstars
such as Pacquiao, De La Hoya and Mayweather have done then I
will surely make it happen for her."
