(FEB 14) Lucia Alfaro, a
boxer from Mexico, was born in Cuernavaca, Morelos. When
Lucia was 15 years old, and at the time studying theatre, her
brother had gotten into training in boxing to defend himself.
Lucia began accompanying him to the gym, and two weeks into
going she decided to also get into boxing to protect herself
from bullying.
At that time women’s boxing had
been legalized in Mexico for only seven years, and in several
places outside of Mexico City there was no women training and no
coach willing to do so.
Due to that dilemma, her father began to take her to a gym near
Cuernavaca’s market with coach Teo Perez.
At first, Lucia only trained to
learn how to defend herself, but in early 2007, she wanted to
know what it was like to get in the ring.
Sadly, her coach did not want to train her to fight, so she
changed coaches, and the one who took her under his wing was
Narciso Gonzalez, a former boxer who participated in the Olympic
Games in Barcelona ´92.
For her preparation she had to spar with men since there were no
women at the time still training in boxing.
She had her first amateur fight
in Tlaxcala in August of 2007, in order to participate in the
National Women’s Boxing Open in October of that year to be held
in Ciudad Victoria, Tamaulipas, winning a bronze medal in the 48
kg category. This was being the first medal in women’s boxing
for Morelos, being triggered interest of women’s boxing in her
state.
After the result obtained in
Tamaulipas, she had a few more fights until she fought in
Cuernavaca in mid.2008 causing an injury in her neck during the
fight. The injury was a cause for her to become inactive
while her rehabilitation lasted for the rest of 2008 and most of
2009.
At the end of 2009, she began training again---preparing very
hard for her returning to the ring, which was in a Dual Meet
between Mexico City and Morelos in early 2010.
By March of that year, she participated in the Regional
Championships in Tlaxcala, winning a gold medal. For this
reason, she obtained the classification for the National Olympic
Games in May, to be held in Guadalajara, Jalisco, in which she
obtained a bronze medal.
For September of that year she participated in the Bicentennial Games in Queretaro, also obtaining a bronze medal.
In 2011, she returned to participate in the Regional and
National Olympics, however her sights were focused on making her
pro debut, which took place on September 9, 2011, against a 4-0
boxer, Victoria Argueta that took place at the Gimnasio
Carlos Zárate, Cuautla in Cuautla, Morelos, Mexico. She
lost by a close decision by a four-round unanimous decision.
Although she started with a setback for her defeat--- that did
not discourage Lucia from continuing as a professional boxer.
Since that time she had fought two more times, with winning her
last bout against Andrea Morales by a four-round unanimous
decision which took place in January of 2012.
