(MARCH 26) The Night Mea
Motu became the NEW New Zealand National (NZPBA Version)
Lightweight champion, after stopping Tania Reid in the third
round.
Undefeated boxer Mea Motu has improved her record to 6 wins with
3 wins coming by way of knockout after taking on the
Australasian Champion Tania Reid. Mea completely out-powered and
out-punched Tania, knocking Tania Reid down every round till
referee John Conway waved it off in the third round. This is the
first professional boxing title Mea Motu has won in her career
so far.
Tania Reid said before coming
into this fight that win, lose or draw, this was going to be her
retirement fight. Tania has been in the boxing industry for a
long time, through the amateur years, being a trainer and also a
professional fighter. With blood, sweat and tears she battles
through her boxing career.
In 2019, she made history by becoming
the first New Zealand women’s boxer to win the historical ANBF
Australasian title. We would like to congratulate Tania Reid for
all her accomplishments in her career and thank you for all her
contributions to New Zealand Boxing.
Mea Motu now the New Zealand Lightweight Champion, will be
jumping straight back into the ring again on April 9th against
Natasha Norden.
As for the undercard, the well-talented boxer Ariane Nicholson
took on MMA fighter and WMC Muay Thai World Middleweight
champion Genah Fabian. Unfortunately, the fight ended in a
controversial fashion.
First-round, was pretty even between the two fighters as they
were feeling each other out. Second round, Ariane started edging
in front with her amateur boxing experience. In the third round,
Genah Fabian took the round completely dominating the round.
However, at the end of round three, the audience didn’t realise
Ariane had a big black ball above her eye and a nasty cut.
Referee John Conway declared the cut done but an accidental head
clash. Due to the fight not reaching the end of round four, the
fight was declared a no contest.
And finally, Jerome Pampellone took on Thomas Russell in a
rematch. This really a good step in boxing history as Ina
Schuster was the referee of this fight, with this being her
first professional boxing fight as a referee in the professional
divisions. Jerome Pampellone had so much boxing skill and
counter-punching skill, it was too much for Thomas Russell.
Jerome knocked Thomas down twice in the fight before Ina waved
the fight off in the second round. Jerome Pampellone now
improves his record to 4 wins with 3 wins coming by way of
Knockout. We will see Jerome fight again on April 9th against
Paane Haraki.
