Prayers Go Out to Young Boxer Jeanette Zacarias Zapata Critically Injured in Ring - Passed Away Five Days Later
Source:  Media
August 30, 2021

(AUG 30) On Saturday night at the IGA Stadium, in Montreal, Canada, 18-year old boxer Jeanette Zacarias Zapata, 143 1/4,  was critically injured in the ring when she was stopped the in the latter round of round four by her opponent Marie Pier Haude, 146.5. The two were scheduled in the welterweight bout for six rounds.

After being plummeted in the corner by a barrage of punches the ref flagged to stop the fight.  Zapata was initially standing up and then went down to the canvass.

An update on Zapata since being placed in a coma, promoter of the event, Yvon Michel stated that her condition has remained stable but that the docts say the next 48 hours are critical to her surviving.

jJust a little over three months ago, Zapata had suffered a KO, when she fought Cynthia Lozano, in the sixth round of a six round bout, and previous to that she lost by an RTD in the third round against Alma Ibarra where that fight took place in 2018, so she was coming out of being inactivity when she fought Lozano in 2021.

Promoter Michael added, "Zapata had undergone neurological exams to get permission to participate in the Montreal fight, because she was knocked out in a match last May in Mexico."

In one news source they wrote the following:  "during the fight, Houle struck Zapata with a left uppercut and then delivered a final right hook, jolting her opponent's mouth guard. Unable to recover after the bell rang, Zapata went into convulsions."

Jeanette Zacarias Zapata, was knocked unconscious during a match on Aug. 28, 2021 against Quebec boxer Marie-Pier Houle and was taken away on a stretcher. Zapata died in hospital on Sept. 2 — five days after the fight.  In a report made public on Tuesday, Quebec coroner Jacques Ramsay said the 18-year-old died of brain trauma caused by repeated blows to the head.
