(JAN 9) Former Mexican world
champion Mariana “Barby” Juarez expressed her support for WBC's
initiative to consider transgender boxing as a third branch of
the sport.
“They (WBC) are right”, Mariana Juarez told IZQUIERDAZO. “White
is white and black is white. All my love and respect for them
(transgender fighters), in the same way that I deserve respect”.
For Juarez, one of the historic fighters in Mexican women’s
boxing and who reigned as flyweight and bantamweight champion, a
new branch for transgender boxing is the right decision.
“If a new division is madre where transgender fighters can
compete, would be amazing for them”, Juarez said. “Because they
should have their opportunity”.
Mauricio Sulaiman emphasized that the WBC will never let a
person that was born a man to fight against a person that was
born a woman, regardless of their current gender. And Mariana
Juarez supports that position.
“We can not change biology or genetics”, Juarez said. “You can
not match the strength that a woman would have against a
transgender man. You can’t do that. I hope they can make a good
analysis, and if they (transgender fighters) get their
opportunity, that should have to be against a person in the same
situation as them”.
