(MARCH 20) IBF World Super
Bantamweight boxing champion, Tauranga-born Cherneka Johnson
will defend her world title in Dublin Ireland on the Katie
Taylor homecoming undercard on the 20th of May (21st NZ time).
Undisputed Lightweight champion
Katie Taylor is considered one of the world's biggest women's
boxing star. For the first time in her professional boxing
career, she will be fighting in her own country Ireland with her
to go up a weight division to fight for the Undisputed Super
Lightweight title against Chantelle Cameron.
Three other world titles will be on the undercard of the event,
including Tauranga-born Australian resident Cherneka Johnson.
Johnson won her world title back in April 2022 and successfully
defended it in October 2022, becoming the first Maori World
Champion to successfully defend a world boxing title. After her
world title defence, she signed a major deal with Lou DiBella
under DiBella Entertainment, the same promoter for Junior Fa and
Hemi Ahio.
Johnson will be defending her world title against London boxer,
Ellie Scotney. Scotney is a skilled boxer with a highly
credentialed amateur boxing background. Since making her
professional boxing debut in 2020, she has won all of her 5
fights (all by decision wins) while winning the WBA
Intercontinental and EBU European Super Bantamweight titles.
This will be a true test for Cherneka Johnson and possibly the
biggest challenge of her career. Not only is she taking on a
highly skilled boxer, but this will also be the first time
fighting outside of Australia, as well as defending her world
title in enemy territory. On another note, this will be the
first time Johnson will be fighting on the international boxing
streaming website DAZN, giving her another opportunity to
showcase to the world who she is.
New Zealand will be watching closely for Johnson to win the
fight, as we still hope to have the first-ever Maori vs Maori
world title fight between Cherneka Johnson and Mea Motu. Motu
team (Peach boxing) has been chasing this fight for months. In
the meantime, Mea Motu will be fighting for the vacant IBO World
super Bantamweight title on April 17th against Canadian boxer
Tania Walters.
Also on the card is Irish-born Australian boxer IBO World Super
Welterweight champion Dennis Hogan. This will also be the first
time in his professional career that he will fight in his home
country of Ireland. He will be defending his IBO World title
against Liverpool's own James Metcalf.
