(SEPT 21) COSTA MESA, CA –
To some, a fight is a fight. To a trained professional, there’s
a world of difference between disciplines, making bouts
featuring boxers versus mixed martial artists in one side’s
particular sport entertaining, but not particularly fair.
On the Thursday, October 26th edition of Fight Club OC in The
Hangar at the OC Fair & Event Center, mixed martial artists Lisa
Mauldin and Angel Blackwell will make their professional boxing
debuts…against each other, with both seeing how the other half
of the combat sports world lives on a level playing field of
four rounds with 8oz boxing gloves.
Call it “The Big Switch”.
“A mixed martial artist fighting a boxer in an MMA fight gives
the MMA fighter a huge advantage, and the same goes true for MMA
fighters engaging in a boxing match with a boxer. It’s really
not a fair fight,” said Hall of Fame promoter Roy Englebrecht.
“On October 26, Lisa Mauldin and Angel Blackwell will get their
chance to test the waters in boxing without having to do so
against someone with a huge stylistic advantage. These two
ladies know how to fight. Now they want to box, and I’m
expecting a barnburner.”
Currently 6-3 as an MMA pro with three finishes, Irvine’s Lisa
Mauldin has been on a tear in the PFL promotion, where she’s won
two straight, including a third-round stoppage of highly
regarded Helen Peralta in February and a first round submission
of Desiree Yanez in August. Now she’ll look to close out 2023 in
the boxing ring with a win over Blackwell.
Fighting out of San Diego, Angel Blackwell not only has a long
amateur background in MMA, but she turned pro last year on a
Combate Global Exclusivo card and even has experience as a
professional wrestler. But now it’s time to step between the
ropes for what she expects to be the biggest fight of her career
thus far.
If that bout isn’t enough, a
second female bout will feature former national amateur champion
Jesikah Guerra 2-0 facing San Jose’s Brianna Jimenez in her pro
debut in a middleweight four round bout.
In the Fight Club OC main event, it’s a six-round Tequila
Mandala Young Champions bout at 147 pounds when Santa Ana’s
Jesse “Lobito” Gonzalez (6-1-1, 2 KOs) faces Josias Gonzalez
(2-1) of Whittier.
