(SEPT 7) Manawatu's own
Sequita Hemingway has won her second New Zealand Heavyweight
title by a majority decision over Cheyenne Whaanga, with a
possible world title fight in the future.
Hemingway who already holds the New Zealand national (Pro Box NZ
version) heavyweight title, has just won the New Zealand
national (NZNBF version) heavyweight title against a tough
Cheyenne Whaanga who returned to the ring after an eight-year
hiatus. Now that Hemingway is a two-time New Zealand heavyweight
title, a possible world title fight could be next.
After this win, Hemingway has reached the top 3 on the Boxrec
heavyweight rankings, putting her inches away from a possible
world title fight, but who would be the person to take her on
and which titles?
Nailini Helu is a strong possibility as she has just came off a
massive win herself over Tinta Smith who is known for beating
Hemingway by a controversial split decision earlier in the year.
Helu just wants to fight, doesn’t matter who, when or where, she
is ready to fight.
Two world titles that have been calling for a new world title
are the WIBA and IBO world titles.
WIBA world title was one of the most active titles for women in
boxing. Before the major four (WBA, IBF, WBC and WBO) started
doing more regular world titles for female boxers, WIBA World
was the title to capture for the women's division. They have not
had a world champion since 2014 and are desperate for a new
champion. They have had four heavyweight world champions in the
past with the Australian Lisa Marie Vizaniari to last hold the
title.
There has been only one New Zealander to win the WIBA title.
Gentiane Lupi from Wellington won the title in the Super
Bantamweight division back in 2015.
The IBO world title is considered one of the biggest titles in
boxing. If there was a ranking system on the world title, the
IBO world title would be ranked 5th, just below the major four.
Coincidentally the IBO World title has not had a champion since
2014 with the only champion to win the title was Sonya Lamonakis
in the Netherlands.
There has only been one New Zealander to win the IBO world
title. Mea Motu is the current IBO World Super Bantamweight
champion.
It is unknown if this fight will happen but this is a fight that
would be history-making. Especially if it happens in Manawatu,
as there has never been a world title fight to happen outside of
Auckland.
