We have come a long way, Baby! 50 Million Netflix Subscribers watch the Katie Taylor vs. Amanda Serrano fight!

(NOV 27) Who would have thought that the Katie Taylor vs. Amanda Serrano fight would have 50 Million viewers watching a female fight on Netflix---no less. The live-streamed boxing card headlined Jake Paul vs. Mike Tyson, which gave this opportunity for Katie Taylor and Amanda Serrano to show what women’s boxing was all about.

What some of you may not know is that WBAN has been covering women’s boxing at boxing events since the late 1990's, with some of the shows being all-female cards. I have traveled to different parts of the United States to cover these all-female cards and other cards that may have one female bout on the card. With the all-female boxing cards, I witnessed many empty seats in the venue, and it was disappointing to see the lack of support that these fighters were receiving.

Over the years, I have also witnessed the lack of opportunities for women boxers in the sport. They faced challenges such as finding opponents for matches, earning very low purses, seeing some that were trying to sell tickets to the very event they were featured in, and so many other issues.

So with that said....you can only imagine, seeing this happen on November 15th!

As the co-main Taylor-Serrano fight began to be live-streamed, just prior to the Paul-Tyson in the main event---my phone was literally going off the charts with contact from  friends, relatives, boxing folks and more.

Even getting contacted by people I had not spoken to in years!

Taylor won by a 10-round unanimous decision----but not without the over surmounting boos from the audience, and many immediately hitting the internet about Serrano being robbed.

Netflix wrote the following....“Netflix and Most Valuable Promotions’ Jake Paul vs. Mike Tyson Mega-Event Makes History With Over 108 Million Live Global Viewers. Most-Streamed Global Sporting Event Ever With a Record 65 Million Live Concurrent Streams. Katie Taylor and Amanda Serrano Fight Is the Most-Watched Professional Women’s Sports Event in US History.”

Netflix continued with....“It was a record-breaking night for Netflix; The Jake Paul vs. Mike Tyson fight was the most-streamed sporting event ever, peaking at 65 million concurrent streams, with 38 million concurrent streams in the US. According to TVision, 56% of all US TV viewing between 12 am and 1 am EST was for the Paul vs Tyson fight; The Paul-Tyson fight garnered an estimated average minute audience1 (AMA) of 108 million live viewers globally from opening to closing bell and continued to drive viewing into the weekend with an estimated AMA of 125 million (Live+1); The Taylor-Serrano fight averaged an estimated 74 million live viewers globally and became the most-watched professional women’s sports event in US history with 47 million AMA in the US; The mega-event was the #1 title on Netflix for the week, with 46.6 million views (total hours viewed/runtime) through Sunday night; and The event was #1 in 78 countries including Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, Germany, India, Italy, Mexico, South Africa, the UK and the US, and in the Top 10 in 91 countries tracked for the week of November 11-17.” more on Netflix

It was truly amazing to see women’s boxing make this “History-Making” event that may have opened the door for other female boxers in the sport.  This was definitely one of the best fights on the card this night---and definitely one of the best that has taken place in 2024!
