Another year has gone by and it is time to have the "Hot" Picks for 2017! WBAN has elected to list more than one boxer in certain categories to give our due respect for those fighters who have worked hard throughout the year to qualify for that top pick!

Cecilia "First Lady" Braekhus has had quite a year in 2017.  In February of 2017, in a Five-Star Boxrec matchup against Klara Svensson, she defended her five world titles (IBF, IBO,  WBA, WBC, WBO), winning by a unanimous decision;  then in June of this year, she fought in yet another five-star Boxrec bout against Erica Farias, defeating Erica by decision, a top-rated unification world title bout that included the (IBF, IBO, WBA, WBC, WBO) world titles, again successfully defending her five world title; and lastly in October, she defeated Mikaela Lauren, rated four-stars with Boxrec, by a sixth round TKO, in a scheduled ten rounder, defending her five titles (IBF, IBO, WBA, WBC, WBO).  She still has remained undefeated after fighting a little over ten years, with a boxing record of 32-0-0 (9KO).  Braekhus,  fought all top-rated opponents in 2017, with all bouts being for five world titles on the line. Braekhus has made her own history in Norway, created her own Boxing Promotional company, and was WBAN's top pick of "Fighter of the Month" three times in 2017! More on Braekhus;

Amanda "The Real Deal" Serrano has had a fantastic 2017 year in and out of the ring! She won the WBC Diamond title, the WBAN World title, as well as becoming the first female to win a world title in five divisions. She was featured in the main event twice on Showtime Boxing Extreme and she was added to the Puerto Rico Sports Museum alongside her sister Cindy “Checkmate” Serrano. There was a beautiful mural painted of she and CIndy in their neighborhood, and just signed a great opportunity for an MMA deal. She also won the Ring 8 NYS Female Fighter of the Year. Out of the ring, she has been featured in 15 magazines, with two on the cover. Lastly, this great multi-world champion was nominated Univision’s Athletes of the year. Amanda was WBAN's top female boxer of the month twice in 2017!

Katie Taylor is from Bray, Ireland, where she has held the WBA lightweight title since October 2017, and successfully defended against Jessica McCaskill in a five-star bout in December of 2017. As a prodigious amateur boxer, Taylor won five consecutive gold medals at the Women's World Championships, gold six times at the European Championships, and gold five times at the European Union Championships. As Wiki stated, "she was the flag bearer for Ireland at the 2012 London Olympics opening ceremony before going on to win an Olympic gold medal in the lightweight division.   She has had seven fights in 2017 and in this short time of turning pro she has already accomplished becoming a world champion. Claressa "T-Rex" Shields

Claressa "T-Rex" Shields is a two-time Gold Medal winner in the Olympics, first earning her first Gold in 2012, and then in 2016.    In March of 2017 she fought Szilvia Szabados for the NABF middleweight title, and winning by a TKO in the fourth round. This bout was featured as the main event on ShoBox and was the first time for a female bout to be in the main event with this Network.  In June, She headlined the "Detroit Brawl," facing Sydney LeBlanc in her first scheduled eight-round bout, winning that bout by decision. In August she defeated Nikki Adler for the WBC Super Middleweight belt, and the vacant IBF belt which was featured on Showtime. Outside the ring, she won the Nickelodeon Kids' Choice Sports Award for "Biggest Powerhouse."

M.C Mary Kom (48) kg for an unprecedented 5th Gold medal at the ASBC Asian Confederation Championships in Vietnam in November 2017.

“I am really happy the way this championship has panned out. I would like to dedicate this victory to all those who have supported me even though the world had written me off. I would like to thank my coaching staff who worked hard with me over the last few months,” said Mary Kom, now aged 35 after her 5th Gold and a Silver in her 6th ASBC final.

Youth Female ‘Amateur’ of the Year: Jyoti Singh who annexed the 2017 Flyweight World title on home soil in Guwahati, India. She had only recently moved up to Flyweight but defeated all comers including Russian favourite Ekaterina Molchanova. That Gold medal performance also guaranteed the young Indian a place in the 2018 Youth Olympics in Buenos Aires, Argentina.

Honourable mention to Team USA’s WBC ‘amateur’ female champion Citlalli Ortiz, relatively unknown on the International circuit. She boxes out of the Lee Espinoza Coachella Boxing Club. 

Having defeated the champions of Ireland, Kazakhstan and Russia, Ortiz dominated throughout AIBA Youth tournament to take her first international title and has the ability to shine at Senior Elite level.

A Great pool of talent who
has now turned pro!

Nicola "The Lioness" Adams a two-time Gold Medal winner in the Olympics, first earning her first Gold in 2012, and then in 2016 made her pro debut in April of 2017.  She made her pro debut on April 8, 2017.   She won by points in her debut, but stopped her next two opponents in her following fights.  She is now 3-0-0 (2KO).

London 2012 Olympian Natasha Jonas signed with Matchroom Boxing and made her professional debut in June of 2017.  She in that short time has already accumulated a 4-0-0 (4KO) record, having four pro bouts in the last six months of 2017.

US Olympic boxer Mikaela Mayer, signed with Top Rank and made her pro debut on August 5, 2017.  She has won all of her bouts in 2017, and now is at 3-0-0 (2KO).   She gave up her dreams to win a gold in the Olympics but she told the Associate Press, ""I just felt I wanted a bigger stage, more of a challenge. But it was a really hard decision for me. I went back and forth with it for months."

Claressa "T-Rex" Shields

Claressa "T-Rex" Shields, has done what many fighters male or female could only dream of or hope for to accomplish in the sport.  Winning two gold medals in 2012 and 2016, and being one of the first females to compete in the "first time in history" in the Olympics that took place in London.  She became a world champion in  2017 after making her pro debut in 2016.  She had three bouts in 2017, fighting for the NABF title in a six-rounder against Szilvia Szabados stopping Szabados in the fourth round (History first being shown on ShoBox); she went on to fight Sydney LeBlanc winning the vacant Silver WBC Super Middleweight belt in a scheduled eight round bout, winning by a unanimous decision; and lastly, winning by a fifth round TKO over Nikki Adlerfor the vacant IBF super middleweight title, and WBC Super Middleweight world title in a ten rounder, among many other accomplishments of this boxer who is helping pave the way for other female boxers...Shields was our top pick in September 2017 as Fighter of the month.

WBAN would like to pay a special Final Tribute to France's World Champion Angelique Ducehmin, just 26 years old who passed away in 2017.  Ducehmin was a professional female boxer with a undefeated boxing record of 14-0 (3KO), winning the WBF Featherweight World title on May 12, 2017 when she defeated Ericka Rousseau by a ten-round unanimous decision.

The Coolest in 2017

Five countries win golds as 2017 AIBA Youth Women’s World Boxing Championships come to a close in Guwahati
(NOV 26)  Sunday witnessed ten thrilling finals of the 2017 Women’s Youth World Championships in the north-east India city of Guwahati, at which Russia, Kazakhstan, USA and South Korea topped the podium along with the hosts India whose boxers dominated the lighter weight categories. (AUG 5) This week I had a great opportunity to attend the National Night Out, that took place on August 1st in Longview, Washington. Oscar De La Hoya to Host 5th Annual After-School Program Giveaway at Garden Grove Boxing
(NOV 7)  Olympic Gold medalist and 10-time boxing world champion Oscar De La Hoya will host his fifth annual after school program equipment giveaway in which he will present new-state-of-the-art boxing equipment valued at thousands of dollars to the youth of Garden Grove Boxing. AIBA and Ching-Kuo Wu – Joint Statement:  Mr. Wu has decided to step down from his position as AIBA President
