Panamanian junior
featherweight Shantal
“La Fiera” Martínez Rodriguez was born on December 28, 1990 in
David, Panama. She trains at the Pedro “Rockero” Alcázar gym, located
in Curundú,
Panama City. (She is also known as Chantal, Shantel or Chantall
Martinez in media reports).
Martinez began boxing at age 10 and
entered her pro boxing
career at age 15 on July 15, 2006 at the Gimnasio
Municipal in Anton, Panama, where she lost a three-round unanimous
decision to
undefeated Carolina Alvarez of Venezuela. Alvarez improved her
record to 5-0-1 (2
KO's) with the win.
In a return bout with Carolina
Alvarez (110½ lbs) on December 29, 2006 at Gimnasio Municipal
in Anton, Panama, Shantal (109 lbs) who had just
turned 16, was knocked out at 1:28 in the first round while Alvarez
progressed to 8-0-1 (4 KO's).
On April
25, 2007 at Centro de Convenciones Atlapa in Panama City, Panama,
Shantal (112½
lbs) scored her first professional win with a four-round unanimous
(39-37,39-37,39-38) decision over Juseth Araúz (115 lbs) also of
Chiriquí,
Panama who
fell to 1-1 and has not fought again.
Martinez then
proceeded to three straight four-round decisions over Kathia Montuto
(118 lbs) of Panama, who began the series with a 1-2 (1 KO)
record. For their first fight on September 8, 2007 at
Gimnasio
del Club de Leones in El Maranon, Panama, Shantal weighed in at 117 lbs
and won by a 39-37 margin on all three scorecards. On October 27, 2007
at Centro Recreativo del Educador in Penonome, Panama Shantal
(119
lbs) won by a 40-36,40-37,40-37 margin. In their final fight
on
March 27, 2008 at Centro de Convenciones Atlapa in Panama
City, Shantal (115 lbs) won by a 39-37,40-36,40-36 score.
On June 14, 2008 at Feria
de la Candelaria in Bugaba, Panama, Shantal (112 lbs) won a six-round
unanimous (60-63 x 3) decision over Olga Julio (112 lbs) of
Barranquilla, Colombia who fell to 4-6-1 (1 KO).
On August 30, 2008, at
Gimnasio
Pandeportes-La Basita in her birthplace of David, Panama, Shantal (118
lbs) won a six-round unanimous decision over Kathia Montuto (118 lbs),
dropping Monuto's record to 1-7 (1 KO).
On October 18, 2008
at Gimnasio
Pandeportes-La Basita in David, Panama, Shantal (120 lbs) won a
six-round unanimous (60-55,59-55,60-55) decision over Monica Acosta
Siris of Aracataca, Colombia who fell to 7-13-0 (5 KO's).
On December 6, 2008 at
Palenque Calle 2 in Zapopan, Jalisco, Mexico, local favorite Irma
Sanchez (114¾
lbs) of Guadalajara, Mexico won a ten-round unanimous decision over
Shantal (115 lbs), moving her own record to 12-2-1 (4 KO's).
On July 21, 2009 at Centro de
Convenciones Atlapa in Panama City, Shantal (122 lbs) won a very close
seven-round split (68½-65,68½-68,67-68) decision
over previously undefeated Ogleidis "La Nina" Suarez (122 lbs) of
Caracas, Venezuela who fell to 8-1-1 ( 4 KO's).
On
January 30, 2010 at Restaurante Arroyo in Mexico
City, Jackie Nava
(122 lbs) of Tijuana, Mexico overcame a pulled muscle in her right leg
to
win a ten-round unanimous (98-90, 98-90, 97-91) decision
over Shantal (122 lbs) for the interim WBC Junior
Featherweight title. Martinez sent the
always aggressive Nava to the canvas with a right to the
head in the sixth round but took a steady beating to the head and body
for
much of the fight as she fell to 8-4-0 (1 KO). Nava improved to 21-3-2
with this win.
On April 22,
2010 at Arena
Roberto Duran in Panama City, Shantal (122 lbs) TKO'd Maria Andrea
Miranda (121 lbs) of Monitos, Colombia in the sixth round of a
scheduled eight-rounder. Miranda fell to 12-4-0 (7 KO's).
On August 14, 2010 at Arena
Roberto Duran in Panama City, Shantal (123¼
lbs) TKO'd Paola Esther Herrera (120 lbs) of Cartagena, Colombia in the
first round of a scheduled eight-rounder, dropping herrera's record to
14-3-2 (6 KO's).
On
October 2, 2010 at Arena Roberto Duran in Panama City, Shantal
(121 lbs) overwhelmed Ogleidis Suarez (120¾ lbs) of
Caracas, Venezuela for a TKO at 1:45 in the sixth round of a scheduled
nine-rounder for the WBA Fedefem Junior Featherweight title. Suarez
fell to 12-2-1 (5 KO's) with her second loss to Martinez.
On
February 10, 2011 at Centro de Convenciones Atlapa in Panama City,
Shantal (123 lbs) TKO'd Angela Marciales (127½ lbs) of Bogota, Colombia
at 1:13 in the sixth round of a scheduled eight-rounder.
Marciales fell to 5-4-3 (4 KO's).
Shantal's
efforts and dedication were rewarded with the keys to a new house in
Chriqui from Panamanian Housing Minister Carlos Dubuy on 21 February
2011.
On
April 2, 2011 at Arena Roberto Duran in Panama City, Shantal (122 lbs)
won a hotly-contested ten-round unanimous (97-93,95-94,95-94) decision
over veteran Lisa Brown
(122 lbs) of
Scarborough, Ontario, Canada for the WBA Junior Featherweight title.
The boxers exchanged solid blows throughout the bout but Martinez
appeared to tire in the late rounds and was lnocked down in the eighth.
"I give thanks to God, to my coaches who did the job and I am happy to
be world champion," Martinez said after her victory, which
dropped Brown's record to 18-5-3 (5 KO's)..
On July 2, 2011 at Feria de
San Jose in David, Chiriqui, Panama, Shantal (120¾
lbs) won by TKO at 1:11 of the eighth round over Paulina Cardona (120
lbs)
of Barranquilla, Colombia for the WBA Junior Featherweight title.
Martinez was the stronger and more aggressive throughout the
fight. Cardona fell to 18-9-4 (7 KO's).
On
September 8, 2011 at Arena
Roberto Duran in Panama City, Panama, Shantal (122 lbs) defended the
WBA Junior Featherweight title with a messy but hard fought ten-round
unanimous (98-92,98-94,96-94) decision over Marylin Hernandez (122 lbs)
of Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. Hernandez fell to 20-8-0
(12 KO's).
On January 28, 2012 at the Auditorio Municipal in
Tijuana, Mexico Jackie Nava
of Tijuana won an emphatic ten-round unanimous
(100-89,100-89,99-90) decision
over Shantal Martinez for the WBA Junior Featherweight title.
After a feeling-out first round, Nava went to work
with hooks and
combinations that quickly slowed Martinez down. Martinez was
knocked
down in the fifth round and barely beat the count, but held on to
finish the fight. Martinez said after the fight that she had
injured
her right hand in the fourth round, but that Nava was a "great fighter"
and "the best tonight". Martinez fell to 15-5-0 (6
KO's).while Nava
improved to 26-4-3 (11 KO's).
