Sylvia E. Villalpando from
Houston, Texas, born November 15, 1990, recently participated in her first
senior tournament.
Following in her older
brother’s footsteps, at age 12 the Texan began the sweet sport of boxing,
trained and won her first fight in the Golden Gloves. She participated in
the 2007 Junior Olympic State Championships and advanced to Nationals in
Marquette, Michigan to represent Texas. She was awarded the silver medalist
in the 2007 Junior Olympic National Championships. She was awarded the 2007
Ringside World Champion. Now that she has turned 17 this makes her eligible
to take part in the senior division.
In March of 2008, returning
from the U.S Olympic Center in Colorado Springs, CO, winning her first U.S
National Championship in the senior division, by defeating Samantha Guzman
29-27. She came home crowned the “2008 U.S 101Lb. Pin weight National
Champion” placing her on the USA Team! She is currently training to travel
around the world along with the rest of the USA Team representing the U.S.
She will be going to Trinidad and to China this year.
Sylvia trains out of The
Elite Boxing Team gym in Houston, TX and coached by Rudy Silva. Along with
Marlen Esparza, a three time U.S National Champion. Sparring and training
with the No. 1 106 Lb. light flyweight amateur boxer in the nation has really
expand the Texan’s skills and abilities to another degree.
The Texan’s dream is to
mark her presence in amateur boxing and to be part of the First Women’s
Olympics in 2012. She wants to recognize and credit where her success comes
from. She thanks God for all his great blessings, her trainer Rudy Silva,
and her friends and family for all their support throughout the years, and
last but not least her father Ruben Villalpando for all his influence and
inspiration he has given her from the get go.
Sylvia’s main focused at
this point is her training and education. She plans to go to a university
straight after graduating. She plans to major in International Business and
Fashion Design. Boxing is her life, and success is her destiny. |
