Canada
Women boxers Mississauga native Olga Heron (3-0-0 (1KO)

Lisa's attach. Lisa was without a doubt the aggressor and won a
unanimous decision by 40-36 on all score cards.

Regina Halmich retained her World Title defeating
Cathy Brown on points over 10 rounds. The judges scored the
fight 98:92, 97:95, 97:94. Cathy Brown started the fight best
and was clearly more powerful. She sent Halmich to the canvas in
the third round, but it was probably more a case of Halmich
getting caught off balance as the punch was on her shoulder.
Halmich better skills, condition and experience turned the fight
for her from round 5 and onwards, and the result was no cause
for controversy, even though the German Judge who saw the fight
98:92 probably was too "kind" to Halmich.

got a chance to meet Moreno and her trainer at the Selland
Arena. She is considering turning pro soon, and talked
about how she felt it was important to pay her dues in the
amateurs first.
April 19, 2003 - Selland
Arena, in Fresno, California
Mia
St. John vs. Jennifer Alcorn: Mia entered the ring first---included in her corner was Fredia “the
Cheetah” Gibbs and Mia’s mother. Alcorn made her appearance
shortly thereafter, with trainer/husband working her corner.
Both boxers appeared to be relaxed and ready to fight….In the
first round, Alcorn and Mia wasted little time in mixing it up
and the fight turned into a slugfest. Within about 20 seconds
into the fight, Mia slipped to the canvas, and it looked like
Alcorn was over-powering Mia at that time. (Mpeg of the slip
on records site,
gallery 51). In the second round, Alcorn and Mia
continued to fight toe-to-toe, but in the later part of the
round, Alcorn was throwing multiple combination and caught Mia
in the corner. Mia weathered out the 2nd round, and
did not appear to be hurt from the attack. (Mpeg on Records
site of 60 seconds of the 2nd round,
gallery 51). Most
of the rest of the rounds was a slugfest between the two with
Alcorn ultimately winning with a unanimous decision. Alcorn
remains undefeated with a 16-0-0 (10KO), and St. John is now 27-3-1
(13KO). Final judges scores was 78-74, 77-75, and 77-75. WBAN
asked St. John how she felt about this fight with Alcorn in a
post-fight interview. St. John said, “Out of my 31 fights this
was probably my favorite fight aside from Christy. Fighting
Jenifer was such a challenge and truly a wonderful experience.
The crowd was on their feet the whole time and found it as
exciting as I did. The fight was an overall success! I went
into
Fresno
sparked a little controversy, we sold A LOT of tickets and
fought our hearts out. My job is complete. I couldn't be
happier. I'll be fighting again in June and hopefully will
rematch with Christy sometime this summer.”
April 19, 2003 - Milwaukee,
Wisconsin
Amateur: Wisconsin Golden Gloves
The Wisconsin Golden Gloves Tournament came back to Milwaukee
Saturday and was greeted by an enthusiastic, if not sellout
crowd, at the Rave ballroom. Two women’s bouts started the
action after the intermission in the 15-bout card. The female
matches were met with solid applause as the crowd showed its
appreciation. Melinda Torres of North Shore Boxing
Club, Waukegan, took Erin Riley, Roufus Boxing Gym here,
to school stopping the local boxer in the first round. Riley
seemed overwhelmed by Torres’ brawl-and-swarm style.
April 18,
2003 - The Palace, Lemoore, CA
In front of a packed audience, at the
Palace
Indian
Gaming
Center,
in Lemoore, California, had a night of women’s boxing, mixed in
with a heavyweight contender Michael Grant, who fought Gilbert
Martinez. The first fight of the night was between Isra “The
Raging Beauty” Girgrah, 128, and Laura Serrano, 124. The two
fought in a toe-to-toe battle that ended in a controversial
eight-round split decision for Girgrah. The
boxing fans met the decision with a loud sound of “boos.”
Serrano, took the Mexico flag and ran through the audience after
the decision was announced. Girgrah delivered Serrano her
first loss as a pro boxer. Final scoring was 79-73
Serrano, and 77-75, and 78-74 Girgrah. The second bout of the evening was featured Sumya
“The Island Girl” Anani, 141, and Fredia “The Cheetah” Gibbs,
140.
Even before the fight began, Anani stared across the ring at
Gibbs, and shuffling her feet as if she was ready to spring in
action at the ring of the bell. Gibbs was also hyped and when
the bell did begin the first round both boxers immediately began
throwing leather. There was some holding throughout the first
round, and they were non-stop until the end of that round. But
it was learned shortly there after that Gibbs may have
experienced a fractured hand and the fight was halted. Anani
won the fight by a TKO. The third night of the fight featured
Grant and
Martinez.
Their fight ended in a win for Grant by a TKO in the later
rounds. Then the ESPN2 cameras stopped rolling as the next
women’s match was to take place between Nina Ahlin,
101.5, and
Vaia Zaganas, 104. It was a very entertaining fight and it was
unfortunate that it did not make television. WBAN did tape the
fight. Vaia Zaganas won the fight with a final scoring of
59-55, 59-55, and 58-56. The last fight of the night was another
women’s match, that could have easily been named the “fight of
the night.” Layla McCarter, 134, of Las Vegas, took on local
boxer from Fresno, Lisa Lewis, 133. It was the classic boxer
against puncher. McCarter was slick as she slipped punches by
Lewis who is also one tough fighter! The six-rounder ended in a
unanimous decision for McCarter.
April 18,
2003 - Atlanta, Georgia
Fight fans in Atlanta
got more than their money's worth in the second Friday Night Fights at the Roxy card last night in Atlanta, Georgia. This nine-bout card was a
crowd-pleasing affair held at this popular Buckhead venue, which marked
the pro debut of top female amateur Janaya "Jai" Davis.
As an amateur, Davis, 158, won three national titles in 2002 while fellow
debuter Mariem Punchenella Brakache, 155, a native of Morocco, had
competed in kickboxing events in Holland before immigrating to the United
States. Davis used her reach and jab to good effect, tattooing her
opponent's face, while Brakache kept up the pressure throughout this
highly competitive four-round middleweight match-up. The final decision
was 40-36 on all cards.

April 11, 2003 - Chicago
Golden Gloves, Chicago, Illinois
Amateurs
Jessica Lenth from Hamlin Park beat Marla del Angel
from Windy City Gym in the 119 Novice Division. Jessica, a
southpaw, asserted herself early on with her jab. The southpaw
turned out to confuse and consternate Marla; Talina Acevedo
from Hamlin Park is now a two-time Chicago Golden Gloves
Champion at 119 Open. She came out strong against Echo Sneed
and with expert lateral movement and a strong jab, Echo never
had a chance; Perhaps one of the more exciting fights was
Tempele Smith, Seward Park v. Maria Barrera of Ekhart
Park. Tempele has been working for the last month with
Leatita Robinson and her movement and style reflected that
fact. A flurry of punching best describes this match. Tempele
gutted out the last round and was rewarded with the win in the
106 Novice Division; Apinya Wipachit of Hamlin Park
dropped a fight to Marilyn Syers of Kaehn BC who was 2-1
going into the fight. Both exhibited excellent skills. Marilyn
aggressively pursued Apinya demonstrating her heart along with
the superior boxing skills. Anti-climatic was the much
anticipated fight between Elizabeth Kerin of Garfield
Park v. Julie Landsdown of Stateway, who trains under the
guidance of Leatitia Robinson. Unfortunately, Elizabeth was
unable to fight because she was in the hospital. Julie wins the
201+ Open Division with a walk over.

just want to say thank you to my trainer Refugio Flores and my
family for supporting me." Gomez, after getting her feet wet in
the professional ranks for the first time said, "I feel good. It
was mostly what I expected, a little different, but I got in
there and that is what is important to me." Scores were 40-35,
38-37 and 37-38. Valenciana improved to 3-0 while Gomez,

when Reis and Jones went right at it from the opening
bell. Ryan said that in the second round, Jones caught Reis with
some big shots on the ropes, and had Reis is big trouble and
that the ref almost stopped the fight, but Reis clinched Jones,
and the ref gave Reis a standing eight count. Ryan went on to
report that the remaining four rounds were non-stop, where both
