Steel" Hallback. 129, defended her 130-lb IBA title, and
faced Melissa "Honey Girl" Del Valle, 130. Hallback won
by a large margin of 99-89, 100-88, and 99-88. WBAN's
insider said that in the third round, Hallback through a right
hand that made Del Valle go to one knee to take a count.
In the fifth and ninth round, Del Valle lost two points for
holding. In the sixth round, both boxers headbutted each
other.
August 30, 2003 - Europa Platz, Karlsruhe,
Germany
In a new pro-league in Germany that was an open-air event with more than
5,000 in attendance in a highly successful event, there were three women's
boxing bouts. Juliane Quasdorf, of Karlsruhe, fought to a four-round
draw with Sandra Schreiber, Offenburg. Also, Maya Frenzel,
Karlsruhe, won a four-round unanimous decision over Birgit Schmidt,
of Hockenheim.

On an ESPN2 card and promoted by Sugar Ray Leonard Promotions,
Holly Holm, 141, now 5-0-0 (3KO) won a four-round
majority decision over Stephanie "Golden Girl" Jaramillo,
142, 3-1-0 (2KO). The fight was televised on ESPN2 and was an
excellent bout between these two.

In the main event, in Biloxi, MS, Laila "She Bee Stingin"
Ali stopped Christy Martin 48 seconds in the fourth round
after giving Martin a serious "Beatdown"....Ali retained her IBA
Championship belt! Ali talked
about fighting Ann Wolfe in her next bout and said that she will
lgive Wolfe a "Beatdown!" In another women's match,
Ann "Brown Sugar" Wolfe won a 10-round unanimous decision
over Valerie Mahfood in a NABA Super-Middleweight Title
fight. Also there was a four-round junior welterweight bout, where

Galina Koleva Ivanova won a 10-round unanimous decision and became
the new EBU European champion in the (57kg) over Maria Moroni who was
defending her title. This was Moroni's third defense, and a rematch
with Ivanova, when the first time out their fight ended in a draw. August 22,

Gatewood, Spokane, Washington, in a scheduled four-round
bout.

- Corpus Cristi, Texas
On the "No Guts, No Glory" card, that was held at the Memorial
Coliseum, in Corpus Cristi, Texas, and promoted by Garrett
Promotions, Linda Tenberg of Austin made it a short
night for Ninfa Herrera, when Herrera was stopped 1:06
of the third round in a scheduled four-round featherweight
bout on the undercard. Tenberg who had a four-inch height
advantage beat Herrera to the punch throughout most of the
rounds. The end came when Tenberg threw a barrage of
combinations that landed Herrera three times on the canvas.
Herrera told the local press that she was just glad it was
over. Herrera said that although she had been knocked down,
that she was not hurt. In the first round, Herrera's boxing
glove had come apart, when the thumb came apart, and there was
a temporary delay to replace both gloves. Tenberg is now 8-7-0
(4KO), and Herrera is now 0-1-1 (0KO).

Kristy Rose Follmar, Indiana, KO’d Willicia Moorehead of
Wisconsin
in the second round. Follmar knocked Moorehead to the canvas twice in the
first round, before the fight was stopped 1:59 of the second round. Follmar
is now 8-1-0 (8KO).

Vaia "Vicious" Zaganas, 105, from Canada, but
fights out of Las Vegas, lived up to her ring name when
she stopped Tracey Stevens, 103 1/4, Thunder
Bay, Ontario, in the second round when
Stevens did not come out for the third round. Vaia dominated
the fight up to that point, with one insider reporting to WBAN
that the fight was "Shockingly one-sided."
Zaganas is now 11-2-0 (5 KO). Stevens fell to 5-6-0 (1KO).s

Marcela Acuña, 126 3/4 lbs., Argentina, won a six-round unanimous
decision over Carmen Montiel, 126 1/4, also from Argentina.
Acuña improves her record to 12-4-0 (6 KO). Montiel remains winless at

eight-round unanimous decision over Mary Ann Almager,

WBAN had to "chuckle" just a tad bit on this latest result
from the Radisson Astrodome Hotel, in Houston, Texas. Not to
cast any accusations as to why a boxer like Shakura
Witherspoon with having one win out of her last 18 fights,
and donning a 9-33-1 record, would have been picked as an
opponent for undefeated 9-0-0 hometowner and crowd favorite
Lanie Ellis. Witherspoon defeated Ellis with a six-round
unanimous decision---not an easy task with these odds stacked
against Witherspoon coming into the fight. Witherspoon
delivered Ellis her first loss as a pro. Oh...by the way,
Congratulations to Witherspoon for this impressive win!
August 21, 2003 - at the Adams Mark Hotel, in
Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
Lakeysha "Total Package" Williams, 122 ¼, won a six-round unanimous
decision over Leona "Downtown" Brown, 119, in a super-bantamweight
division. Williams is now 7-6-2.
August 21, 2003, Graham Central Station, San
Antonio, Texas
Audrey Vela, now 4-0(1 KO), won a close unanimous decision over last-minute
replacement Kim Colbert of Atlanta as part of the Thursday Night Fight
Series in San Antonio at Graham Central Station in front of over 1,500 fans.
Vela, a 1999 National Golden Gloves Champion has had fight after fight
cancelled and postponed to the point she hasn't fought in over a year and
eventually moved to the gym of Austin-based Ann Wolfe to get ready for her
fight. Vela weighed in at a contracted 120 pounds. Wolfe even appeared
at the fight card's announcement press conference to support Vela and help
promote her own Aug. 23rd battle on the Ali-Martin fight on PPV. Vela
easly outboxed her jet-lagged but dangerous opponent Kim Colbert in Round
one. Colbert landed a highlight-reel left hook that floored Vela in
round two and it looked like Vela wouldn't get up. However, she
did, whethered Colbert's storm and made it to the bell. Vela easily won
rounds three and four by out boxing Colbert. The crowd appreciated and
respected Vela getting up and continuing. However Colbert had won the crowd
over being the underdog and having an unorthodox but crowd-pleasing style.
The audience booed the duke for Vela, who happened to be from nearby Austin,
and had been heavily promoted as part of the promotion. It was Colbert
that did the bowing and posturing after the decision as if she had won the
fight but both showed good sportsmanship and a while later both fighters
were posing for pictures and signing autographs for the appreciative fans.
Vela attributed "rust" to getting caught with the left hook in round two but
showed much respect for Colbert.

opponent Melissa Rodriguez in the fourth round. Gina
Guidi who was making a comeback did not make it onto the

Anissa "The Assassin" Zamarron won a unanimous decision over
Stephanie "All Action" Dobbs in a six-round junior flyweight bout.
Zamarron looked sharp and dominated the very game Dobbs from the opening
bell. All three judges scored the bout 60-54.

Here at the new beautiful state of the art D.C. Convention
Center in it's inaugural sporting event, a fairly large crowd saw the 'Raging
Beauty' Isra Girgrah (129) win a tight, but controversial unanimous
decision over Melissa 'Honey Girl' Del Valle (132) over eight rounds.
The scorecards by the three judges were 78-74, 78-74, and 77-75. The crowd’s
response was not in agreement with the decision. This observer had it 78-76,
in favor of Del Valle. In a non-title match up, Del Valle, coming in
from Miami, started out quickly, wasting no time by going on a relentless
attack from the opening bell. She peppered Girgrah with some heavy punches
early and had the hometown favorite backing up during the first two rounds.
Girgrah, sensing the need to respond, returned the favor in the third and
had Del Valle on her ‘bicycle’ throughout most of the round. In
the fourth, the two female combatants decided to mix it up more from
the inside and equally traded punches in what looked like an even round.
Then, in the fifth, Del Valle went to more of a ‘cut and
dance’ approach and out slicked the flatfooted Girgrah, by moving away when
Girgrah attempted to counter Del Valle’s quicker punches. There were a few
holds here and there, but for the most part a clean round that went to the
slick and flashy Del Valle. The sixth round was another
close encounters round where Girgrah attempted to slow Del Valle down by
holding a little and punching more before the referee ordered them to break.
The round was even. In the seventh, Girgrah went on the
offensive and stalked a dancing Del Valle, who worked off the ropes and
tried to frustrate Girgrah, sensing that she needed the round. Girgrah
landed the more effective punches and took the round. Then, in
the eighth and final round, both ladies went toe to toe but Del
Valle seemed to have more bounce and dance in her feet and fought off the
ropes more toward the end in order to preserve what was perceived as a
narrow lead and took the round in my opinion, but the decision went the
other way in the final outcome, with Girgrah, the hometown favorite, getting
the decision while the fans were vocally not in favor of the decision.
Some members of the audience thought that Del Valle was the better of the
two fighters and should have won the decision.

Carlette "The Truth" Ewell of Winston-Salem, NC, TKO'd
Kathy "Two Guns" Goins in the first round. WBAN's Insider said that Carlette is a devastating
puncher. Suzy was game but was well out of her league against the more
experienced Ewell. Ewell was the aggressor from the first bell until the
referee stopped the punishment and not a moment too soon. Suzy was dazed
several times by bullseye rights that Ewell landed to the the head on
several occasions.

said that Yanas swarmed Harding from the opening bell, and
knocked her down twice before the fight was stopped. WBAN was
told that Harding landed "one" punch. Harding was
originally going to fight Holly Dunaway, 3-3-0, of Ft. Smith,
Arkansas.

Oksana Vasilyeva, Russia, won a six-round unanimous decision
over Poland's Edyta Olewnicza.
