December 24, 2003 - Yongin Indoor

In front of a sell-out crowd, South Korean Lee In-Young retained
her IFBA Flyweight title when she won by a 10-round split decision over
Misa "Marvelous" Morimoto of Japan. Final judges scoring was
97-96, 96-95 for In-Young, and 96-95 for Morimoto. Promoted by
Byun, Jeong II, this fight was be broadcasted on South Korean
television. According to the Korea Times, it was a very close
fight that both boxers "slugged it out" all ten rounds. Morimoto
won the earlier rounds, with In-Young starting out tense in the match.
Morimoto raised the tempo from the third round, locking up Lee if she
tried to come inside and countering with efficient hooks. In the eighth
round, In-Young went down after being clipped with a hook on the
counter, but the referee ruled it was a slip. In the last round
Morimoto went down, but the ref ruled that a slip. Morimoto said after
the fight that the fight should have at least been a draw, and that she
was disappointed about the results. Morimoto said, "I really can't
understand how the scores were in favor for Lee." In-Young said
that this was one of her toughest fights she has had thus far.
December 21, 2003 - Marriott Hotel,
Bristol, England
In front of a sell-out crowd, on her own 'dinner-show' promotion, in a
rematch, Jane Couch, 144, won by a clear unanimous decision
(80-73) over Brenda Bell-Drexel in an eight-round welterweight
bout. An excerpt from the Evening Post, "In
the first round was a range-finder for Couch, it served its purpose. She
won the second easily, catching her heavier opponent with neat jabs and
right hooks to the head. Couch held centre stage in the third, teeing
Bell-Drexel up with more well-aimed jabs and making the American lunge
and miss. But any thoughts of putting the Texan away early were
dispelled in the fourth when Couch dominated, landing with punishing
combinations to head and body, only for her opponent to stand firm.
Although the American was durable, her only moments of success came at
close quarters. Wily Couch kept moving, demonstrating superior fitness
and technique to stay in control. Couch's timing was impeccable as
she warmed to her task in the seventh, and Bell-Drexel was breathing
heavily when she retreated to her stool at the end of the session."
Tex Woodward, Jane Couch's manager/coach said, "Jane boxed more
thoughtfully this time and was a clear winner, but Brenda must be given
credit for never stopping trying, looking for that 'big punch' right up
to the last bell. As last time it was a pleasure working with Brenda,
and her trainer John Roppolo, they are both great ambassadors for
boxing".

-Bergamo, Italy
Stefania Bianchini of Italy, successfully defended her Flyweight
European Title against Cathy Brown of London, England. News
sources in that area reported that Bianchini won by a split decision,
but not without controversy in the decision. Brown’s manager Adam Booth
said, “said, Cathy boxed brilliantly and even the crowd knew she won the
fight." This was a substantial disappointment for Brown, as she would
have become the first British woman to win a European Boxing Union
Title.

On a card promoted by Teampalle, the scheduled Anita Christensen
vs. Hagar Shmuelfeld was changed to an
exhibition match without scoring due to Shmuelfeld being only
19 years old. The Danish legal system stipulate a minimum age of 21 for
professional boxers. Usually exemptions are granted from this rule for
boxers who presents a medical certificate, but the Danish Justice
Department refused to grant Smuelfeld this despite her having a valid
boxing licence and a doctor's certificate. The Justice Dept. demanded a
brain scan for the Israeli fighter, which forced Teampalle to change the
fight to an exhibition. The fighters were not influenced by the changed
status of the fight, and were both eager to show skills and heart.
After a somewhat cautious start in the early rounds, Anita Christensen
dominated the last 3-4 of the six rounds. Hagar Shmuelfeld was
certainly no pushover, although her short and unflattering record list
might suggest otherwise.
December 13, 2003 -Convention Center,

In the co-main event, Holly Holm, 144, of Albuquerque, Holly Holm
won a six round unanimous decision over Angel Martinez, 142, of
Dallas, Texas. Final scoring by judges was 59-54, 59-55, and 59-55. Holm
has improved her record to 7-0-1 (3 KO), and Martinez is now 2-1-0
(0KO). Holm squeezed out a unanimous decision after six rounds.
Dan Mayfield, an
Albuquerque Tribune reporter said the following:
"Holm was heavily favored to
win. But again, it was a clash of styles as Holm's kickboxing background
showed against Martinez's well-timed classic boxing style. "
Martinez was quoted in the
Albuquerque that she tought the fight was close,
and that she would like a
rematch. Martinez referred to Holm as a "wild boxer" and that she
was "overrated." Holm has some few choice words of her own about
Martinez's remarks, and said, "If she says I'm not so good, then why did
I get the win?"
December 12, 2003 -
Legends Casino, in
Toppenish, Washington
Lisa
Holewyne of Crawford, Texas, defeated World Champion Sunshine
Fettkether, in what was described in news sources as an
impressive victory with a ten-round unanimous decision, and she became
the new GBU Welterweight champion. Final judges scoring was
98-92, 98-92, and 99-91. In a second
match, Kelsey Jeffries, stopped Carla Wilcox 1:49 seconds
of the first round. There is an excellent news article written on last
night's event, although WBAN believes they are incorrect in Holewyne
"reclaiming" the GBU title. The first time that Holewyne and
Fettkether fought, they fought for the WIBF title.
December 11, 2003-Lemoore, California
Jenifer "All American" Alcorn, 134, now 18-0, brought home a
third world belt after defeating Melissa "Honey Girl" Del Valle,
135, in what news sources reported as a controversial split
decision. In the second round, Alcorn was knocked down to the
canvass, with a hard left hook, and then after that knockdown, according
to the Fresno Bee, Alcorn "chased, chased, and chased in the most
frightening race of her life."
Final
scoring by the judges was, 96-93, 95-94 for Alcorn, and 95-94 for Del
Valle. Alcorn said that Del Valle made the same mistake as the first
opponent, Jessica Rakoczy made when fighting her, in that both of them
"ran." Del Valle was certain that she had won the fight, and indicated
that this was not the first time that a hometown decision was made in
some of her previous fights. Del Valle's trainer apparently was
livid about the decision and said that the decision of this fight was a
disgrace to boxing.
December 11, 2003 - Fantasia Night Club, in Queens, New York
Gracie Roca, 109.5, Brooklyn, New York, won a controversial
four-round majority decision over Vaia "Vicious" Zaganas, 106,
Las Vegas. One judge scored the fight a draw, and the other two judges
had it 39-37, 39-37. WBAN contacted promoter Sal Musumeci, about the
Zaganas-Roca fight and told WBAN that he thought that Zaganas had won
three out of the four rounds. He also added that he would like to view a
tape of the fight in the privacy of his office to see how the judges
came up with Roca as the winner. WBAN asked Musumeci if the fight may
have been a home brewed decision. Musumeci did not seem to feel that it
was the reason for this particular decision. Musumeci said that he would
love to have a rematch between Roca and Zaganas at the Fanstasia Club.
WBAN commented to Musumeci if Zaganas got a bad decision the first time,
why would she go back to the same venue, in the same situation just to
risk another potentially bad decision. Zaganas told WBAN that she knows
that she won that fight and just could not believe such a bad decision.
Zaganas said that she was assured before taking the last-minute fight by
the matchmaker that the judging would be fair, and that she trusted that
the fight would be judged fairly (fighting a hometowner)---but that it
was not. WBAN is going to try and get a video copy of this fight.

December 6, 2003 - Emerald Queen Casino,
Tacoma, Washington
Beth Westover of Boise, Idaho, 120 pounds, made her professional
debut against Michelle Herron, of Bothell, Washington. It
only took thirty seconds of the first round for Westover to shake off
any nervousness and gain control. Herron, who had the height and reach
advantage, used it wisely in the opening thirty, but after that the
fight was all Westover. She applied constant pressure, fighting in
close, and keeping Herron backpedaling most of the fight. Herron lost
one point in round four for holding, but at that time, it made no
difference. Westover won the unanimous decision 40-35 on all three
judge's cards. Westover is now 1-0-0 (0KO), and Herron dropped to 1-2-0.

to Birmingham. In another women's match, Monica Nunez
raised her record to 7-1 (4KO), when she stopped Shadina Pennybaker,
now 7-4-1(2KO) about 1:23 seconds of the second round of a scheduled

strong and fast in the first round, but then was tagged with a couple of
perfect left hooks. The second hook was a devastating one
that dropped Shadina. After that the rest was history. Shadina kept
trying to fight but never recovered. Both of the women's matches
were very entertaining and action-packed bouts. Report by Jordan
