In some amateur action, Leslie Sonnenklar, 168, stopped Chrystal
Proctor, 182, in two rounds. This was billed as a grudge match as
the two girls tried in vain for months to get together for a round of
fisticuffs. After a wild first round, Leslie settled down and went
back to the basics. Leslie jabbed well and moved side to side, eventually
busting Proctor's nose into a bloody mess. Proctor had taken enough of a
beating and surrendered after round two. Leslie was bruised as well but hung
tough for the TKO win. The crowd was really into this fight from the opening
bell. Their energy rubbed off on the fighters. Sonnenklar is hoping to
resume her boxing career soon but lack of women in her weight class often
hinders her fighting prospects. Sonnenklar is trained by former Welterweight
Champion Eric Hernandez and his brother, Carlos. The bout was co-promoted by
Peter McKinn and by Larry Webster with Arizona Presents. July 28,

Denise Moses, making her pro debut stopped Kim
Jeffrey in the first round winning by :20 seconds TKO in a scheduled
four-rounder. Moses has been boxing for close to two years,
and trains at the Lawrence Boxing Club. Moses, 18, is a senior
at Lawrence High School, where she briefly played football as
a quarterback. The 5-3 ˝, 118-pounder was 5-0 as an amateur.
She captured the New England Golden Gloves novice title this
year. Before making her pro debut, Moses said, “Some day I’d
love to be a world champion, but right now I’m fighting
because it’s fun.”

Vaia "Vicious" Zaganas won by a unanimous decision over
Sarah Goodson in a rematch for the two in a scheduled
six-rounder. An Insider at the fight reported that
Zaganas won every round, and that 'Zaganas came close to
matching Roy Jones' record against Pazienza for an opponent
not landing a single punch in a round.' The insider did report
that Goodson was "game" but she did not have an answer for
Vaia's boxing style. Final

Super-middleweights Erin Toughill won a four-round
unanimous decision over Nicole Conant of Las Vegas, in
a scheduled Four round bout. Toughill dominated the fight and
walked away with a clean 40-36 on all score cards.Toughill
is now 3-1-1, and Conant slips to 1-1-0. Also,
Sosadia Razo won by TKO3 over Khurel Gerelgazav.

welterweight championship bout with Fettkether eventually
earning a close decision over Jeter and both receiving a

in the main event. Williams and Sitzes fought to an eight-round
controversial (split) draw. Final scoring by the judges was 77-75
(Williams), 77-75 (Sitzes), and 76-76 (Draw). James Baker and Bernard
Harris were originally supposed to fight in the main event, but due to
Harris coming in 12 lbs heavy, their fight was reduced from a 10-rounder, to
a six-round exhibition.

Wyman dropped Serrano in the second and fifth Round. Final
judges scores were 58-54, 58-54, and 57-55...Also, in a
four-rounder that was televised, Mary Jo Sanders won a
four-round unanimous decision over Cynthia Prouder with
a 40-36 shutout. The Wyman and Serrano fight was not
televised as time had run out, in fact took place AFTER the
main event..but the Sanders/Prouder was televised. Another
interesting sideline to this card was Mia St. John was
host as a "roaming reporter" for ESPN2.

Miriam Rosario, now 1-1-0 won a four-round unanimous
decision over Rosa Ponce, now 0-3-0. Report by Mel
Baron: On of July 5th, I saw a star in the
ring. This shorter than average women was pleasing the few thousand boxing
fans who watched a 4-round, intensive fight as part of the annual boxing
show at the Del Mar Fair, in Del Mar, CA, 20 minutes north of San Diego.
Her name was Miriam Rosario (1-1), a 5'2" female boxer from Los Angeles, CA,
training out of the Azteca Boxing Club in Bell, CA.
She has been in the fight game for three years. Her amateur record was
fifteen wins and five losses. At 18 years old, she has the skills to be a
great professional pugilist. Her opponent was Rosa Ponce, a feisty,
also short local gal from El Cajon, CA. She came in with an (0-2) record.
Both fighters were not afraid to stand in there and fight for the full
two-minute rounds.
Even though Ponce went hard to Rosario’s body, she was not able to
overcome her weak defensive skills. Rosario, a focused fighter would send
straight rights and nice left hooks in-between Ponce's slow punches. I
give Ponce a 10 for courage, but in the ring skills are more important.
Rosario has the making of a champion fighter, who I hope will weather the
boxing pitfalls and shine. Each boxer received $800 for her efforts.

this fight
On the card, "Riot At
the Hyatt" Carina Moreno, 21, Watsonville, CA., won by
a four-round unanimous decision over Cecilia Barraza of
Chicago. Final judges scores was 40-36. Moreno is
now 1-0-0 (0KO), and Barraza is now 2-1-0.Mike Conley of the
Santa Cruz Sentinel was quoted as saying that
Moreno remained on
the attack the entire four rounds, setting up combinations and that
Moreno backed Barraza into a corner and bloodied her nose with a
vicious right late in the third round. Conley went on to write, that
one round later, Moreno circled like a shark to chum. She backed
Barraza into a corner once again and continued the punishment. With
about 12 seconds left in the bout, the referee asked Barraza if she
was OK to continue. She nodded yes. Moreno swooped back in for the
final blow, another huge right to the swelling mass of red at the
center of Barraza’s face just before the bell rang. Barraza's
camp verified that in the last round, she broke her nose in that last
round.
