Press Release:  "Tha Bomb" is back!  BATON ROUGE, LA (JUNE 30, 2000) - With her fellow Atlanta Falcons cheerleaders cheering her on, Nina "Tha Bomb" Ahlin returned to the ring for the first time since March, and did so in impressive fashion, shutting out a gutsy Deanna Nance over four rounds at the Centroplex in Baton Rouge.  Ahlin, a world ranked strawweight, lifted not only her record to 6-2-1 (2 KO's), but her spirits as well with the win. "I'm back on the winning track," said "Tha Bomb". "I controlled every round and my combinations were coming together. I've got a new trainer, and everything is going great now. Whaley had come from Cedar City, Utah, to take on the unbeaten Mueller, a U.S. cross-country and New England track champion while at Waterford (Conn.) High School. Mueller, now 4-0, fought out of a charging crouch. She belted Whaley with hard rights for the duration. But Mueller couldn't put the tired but game Whaley away unitl the sixth round. Mueller, 25, of Hartford, eventually won on a 40-35 decision."

Brawn and brains highlighted the Cedric Kushner Promotions professional boxing card Friday, June 23, at the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas, the second in a series of monthly shows.   Gina Nicholas defeated Suzette Taylor with a majority decision in a six-round super middleweight bout.  The fight was an action-packed bout for the two women and a very close decision!   Nicholas improved her record to (11-4-2), and Suzette Taylor of Las Vegas dropped to (9-2).  The second women's bout on the card was Mara Callihan vs. Geraldine Iglasias.  Mara Callihan won  her pro debut by a TKO 1:10  in the 3rd round of their scheduled four-round bantamweight bout.  Callihan, who teaches kindergarten at Selma Bartlett Elementary School in Green Valley, is one of the fighters who has received a Master’s degree. June 18, 2000 Regent Hotel, Las Vegas, NV
Freeda Foreman (180) vs. Laquanda Landers (168) Foreman TKO'd Landers 1:44 in second Round.   Review from the Las Vegas Sun: "The best that can be said for Freeda (George) Foreman is that she won, as her "fight" with fellow novice LaQuanda Landers may have been the worst in recorded history. It mercifully ended at 1:44 of the second round when Foreman dispatched her opponent with a willowy punch that personified the slow-motion bout." Maria Johansson vs. Karrie Frye (Super-Middleweight) Four-round split decision we to Frye, bringing her record to 5-1 (4KO).  Maria is now 0-1.  Review from the Las Vegas Sun:  "The other women's feature was just the opposite, as Maria (Ingemar) Johansson and Karrie Frye had a competitive battle that went Frye's way by split decision. She had Johansson down and bleeding, and raised her record to 5-1 at the would-be protege's expense. For what it's worth, both Frye and Johansson would defeat Foreman with ease." June 15, 2000 - Universal City, California
Laila Ali vs. 48-year old woman, Majorie Jones.
Boxing fans and WBAN were right again.  Most said the pathetic matchup wouldn't last 25 seconds.   Well it lasted 68 seconds with Jones getting knockdown three times with the third one ending the fight.   There will be a "father's day" special with another two daughters fighting this weekend, Freeda Foreman and Maria Johannson... WBAN hopes that those two matches will be  better than  the "bomb" that happened tonight at the Universal Amphitheater, in Universal City, California.  As one news source reported that Marjorie Jones "didn't have a clue."    News sources also quoted Laila saying,  "I told the referee to let me knock her out."  If that is what she said, and she had been quoted correctly, then this match was even MORE pathetic.  The only saving grace tonight was that her father, Muhammad Ali was at ringside and the crowd was able to see the champion who had earned his strips to be where he is today as a fighter who had taken on the best to become a three-time World champion..

June 11, 2000 - Sunset Station - San Antonio, TX
Mary Wells TKO'd Tracy Maki 58 seconds in the third round.
Wells improves her record to 2-0, and Maki, losing her pro debut is 0-1. Esteban Erik Stipnieks, a gymmate to Wells and who covered the fight reported the following:  Wells TKO'd Tracy Maki, and the  Avila v Flores cancelled.  At Sunset Station tonight Mary Wells continued her climb up the Jr Welterweight ladder. The stoppage could be considered a bit controversial in the fact it happened a bit early though Wells was clearly getting the better of the action. It was a brawler versus boxer battle. The Wells camp was boastful saying they would get a TKO and had a game plan. The Maki camp had a solid game plan as well. Kudos for sharing it with me. Yet in the fight the one who executed, the brawler, won. The fight had a pattern the power of Wells versus the skill of Maki. For a Junior Welterweight bout is the battle of twin towers Tracy Maki at six feet, Mary Wells at five eight. Maki was clearly the more polished of the two fighters and managed to get some solid shots on Wells taking some advantage of Mary's lack of boxing skills. Maki failed to use her reach advantage. Wells dropped her hands and threw some wild winging shots. Her victory was far from pretty. The pattern was steady through all three rounds yet she landed and she landed with force. This power finally won the fight for Mary. Tracy and Mary both got bloody noses Tracy's by far was worst indicating the power of Mary Wells. .The other scheduled woman's bout did not materialize. Martha Flores who is a former Golden Gloves champ did not get to fight Lisa Avila. Martha who is 0-3 by decisions was looking forward to a local bout where she would not have to KO an opponent. Rumor was that Lisa had broken a nose during sparring.  I would like to thank Team Maki for answering my ?s. Tracy Maki's camp in the end proved to be a class act. Tracy put up a solid fight and her camp respected me and treated me well with the adverse conditions I was operating under.  (A special thanks to Esteban from WBAN for covering this fight!)

June 9, 2000 - Casino Nova Scotia - Halifax, CA
IFBA Junior Lightweight champon Doris Hackl of Pugwash, Nova Scotia TKO'd Shondell Alfred of Georgetown, Guyana. Shondell was TKO'd 1:14 of the fourth round that was scheduled for six. Hackl remains undefeated with a 5-0 (2KO) record. Alfred dropped to 4-1. As one local news source reported, Alfred  gave away six inches and had  to look up at Hackl  in every sense of the word. Hackl "whipped" Alfred at the debut boxing event for the Halifax Casino.  A repeated barrage of punches left Alfred defenseless against the ropes. An "Insider" said, "this Girl was tough but her boxing style was dirty--- lots of headbutts.  Doris' boxing skill was to much for her."

Trina Ortegon (153) of Albuerquque, New Mexico fought Marsha Valley (156 3/4) out of Los Angeles, California, defeated Valley with a split decision.  WBAN's Inside reporter said that Valley got frustrated in the sixth round and did a take down on Trina by grabbing her shoulder and sweeping her to the canvass.  The fight was an excellent bout between the two, and the scoring was
78-75,  78-74 79-74.  The Journal - observer had the bout scored 78-73 for Ortegon.  The second women's bout was called off when Wendy Rodriguez's opponent, Jayla Ortiz could not make weight.  Rodriguez weighed 109 lbs, and Ortiz came in at 117. The weight limit was 115.  Rodriguez's team gave Ortiz a chance to make weight by giving her some time to weigh in again but Ortiz could not take off the extra two pounds.

June 2, 2000, Roxy in Massauchusetts
