Nikki Eplion, now 5-0-1, of Southpoint,
Ohio, stopped (TKO2) Gwen Wood, in their second outing.
According to WBAN's Insider, Wood stayed on the stool after the
first round. Wood said before the fight that she had not been in
the ring since last April of 2002, when she fought Eplion the
first time, but took the fight because she needed the money.
Wood is now 0-2-0, after being stopped twice by Eplion in both
fights.

Savannah, Georgia
Chevelle “Fists of Steel” Hallback, 145, moved
up in weight class to Junior Welterweight, and defeated former
WIBC welterweight champion Mitzi Jeter, 138, of
Georgia.
According to local news sources, Hallback got the best
“slugging” in, and that when she would tire, would effective use
her jab to keep Jeter at bay. On all judges scorecards, the
final score was 59-55.

2003 - Coconut Creek Seminole Indian Casino, Coconut Creek,
Florida
In association with Warriors Boxing Promotions, there were three
women’s matches on the card. In a four-rounder, Jennifer
Mancil, 160, won by a unanimous decision over Cimberly
Harris, 154 in a toe-to-toe slugfest. All three judges
scored the match 39-37; In a six-rounder, Belinda
Laracuente, 136, won a unanimous decision over Gina
Greenwald, 133; and in a super-bantamweight bout,
Ada Velez, 120 won by a seventh round disqualification over
Leona Brown, due to excessive holding.

2003 Chamsil Gymnasium, in Seoul, Korea
Lee In-Young, 31, remained undefeated with a 6-0-0 (2KO)
record after defeating United States boxer, Yvonne Caples,
31, in a scheduled flyweight eight-rounder. Caples is now
7-6-1 (1KO). In-Young told reporters, “It was a difficult fight
for me because she (Caples) has better technique than me and I
was fatigued in the later half.” In the bout, Caples, a
southpaw, used her jab effectively in the first two rounds
of the fight, but In-young’s powerful hooks bloodied Caples nose
in the third. Promoter Byun Joeng-il said that this puts
In-Young in line for a IFBA World Title shot against Michelle

At the Creek Nations Gaming Center, with a sold out crowd of
about 900 boxing fans, they were treated to a “novice” match
between Alejandra Lopez, 18, boxing for about four-eight
weeks, no amateur experience Vs. Tonya Harding.
WBAN’s Inside reporter said that there was an eight-pound
difference between the two novices, as Lopez weighed in at 116
lbs and Harding weighed in at 124 lbs, with Harding weighing
over the contract weight of 120 lbs. WBAN’s insider described
the fight as basically a “cat fight” and that neither fighter
appeared to have much training. According to this
Insider, Tonya’s nose bled from round one, and by round two,
Lopez was bleeding as well. A boxing fan in attendance
said that the fighting was "pretty bad" but the boxing fans
enjoyed the fight. Final Scoring by all three judges was
36-40 for Harding. This is the third “novice” fight for Harding,
who is now
2-1-0 (0KO).

Tracy Byrd won a decision in an action-filled 10-round
WIBO championship over Aga Rylik, of Poland, the
undefeated WIBF Junior Welterweight champion with a 13-0-0
record coming into the fight. Rylik and Byrd were battling
for the WIBO Super-Lightweight championship belt. In the
second round, Byrd was knocked to the canvass by Rylik.Final
scoring was 95-94 Byrd; 96-93 Rylik, and 95-94 Byrd. Byrd is
the new champion, with a 13-7 records, and Rylik is now 13-1-0
(11KO).

Flyweight Sonia De Biase, Italy, won a six-rounder by
a unanimous decision over Monika Petrova. Sonia was back
in the ring after a six-month layoff. Petrova was 10 cm
taller than Sonia, and it was not easy for Sonia to get on the
inside to box Petrova. Petrova utilized the ring, and
showed good technical abilities. Petrova was headbutting, and

Jacqui "Sister Smoke" Frazier-Lyde won an eight-round
non-title fight over Shirvelle Williams. There were
no knockdowns in the mainliner, but according to the Philly news
Frazier-Lyde won all rounds.
All three
judges scored the bout at 80-72.
Frazier-Lyde improves her record to 11-1-0 (9KO), and Williams
drops to 5-4-0 (1KO).

California
Kelsey Jeffries, 125.5, Gilroy, retained her IFBA
featherweight title against Rolanda Andrews, 126,
Atlanta, Georgia, in a 10-round unanimous decision. There were
no knockdowns. Final Scoring was 99-91, 99-91, and 98-93.
March 20,
2003 - Puerto Colombia, Atlántico department, in Colombia
There were three women bout that was broadcasted on “Telecaribe.”
In a rematch for the two, Ana Pascal from Panamá retained
her Junior Welterweight WIBA world title by winning a 10-round
unanimous decision over Liliana Palmera from Colombia.
It was a competitive match, but the results were the same as the
first time that the two fought. Most thought that Pascal would
KO Liliana, but she fought with a lot of heart, and hung in
there. Liliana was knocked down to the canvas in the second
round, and later in the bout Pascal lost a point for a foul.
Pascal had won most of the 10 rounds. In the second women’s
match Luz Marina Sarabia, from Colombia, won by majority
decision over Damaris Pino, from Panamá in four-round
126-lb bout. It was a solid match, with Damaris gaining an
early lead, but with Sarabia winning the third and fourth round
decisively. In the third women’s match and rematch Junior
Welterweights Darys Pardo from Colombia won by TKO at
1:23 in the first round to Mónica Siris from Colombia.

Marie Saccurato, 146 ½, from

News sources reported that the bout was hard fought between the
two, and that Saccurato was disappointed in the result.
Final judges scoring was 39-37, 37-39, and 38-38.

Stephanie Jaramillo, now 2-0-0, 143, defeated pro
debuter Angie Poe, 145.6, with a four-round unanimous
decision. Final scoring was 40-36 all judges. Jaramillo said
that Poe was tough, and had a lot of heart. Jaramillo said
that she wanted to pace herself and use her jab.

Tonya Harding, won a four-round unanimous decision over
pro debuter Shannon Birmingham. Harding is now 1-1-0
(0KO). Birmingham is 0-1-0.

In front of a crowd of 900 boxing fans, Vonda Ward
won the bout after overmatched opponent Jeanine Tracy,
of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, quit one minute in the third round.
Ward is now 17-0-0 and Tracy dropped to 2-7. In a
second's women's match featherweight Kelli Cofer
stopped Willicia Moorehead in the second round after
being knocked down three times. Cofer improved her
record to 10-0-1, and Moorehead fell to 2-13. The
matchmaker of this event gets an "F" for putting together
these lame matchups.

Trisha Hill, 126, TKO2 1:55 Lisa Foster, 130.
Hill improved her record to 3-2-0,
and Foster fell to 6-5-1.

month, Naquana Smalls, defeated one of top's talent US
amateur Amber Gideon in an action-packed bout. Smalls and
Gideon were the fourteenth fight of the night, where there were 23
scheduled amateur bouts. Team Smalls contacted WBAN, and said that
Naquana planned on staying busy in preparation for the Nationals in
July. They went on to say, “In honor of being WBAN's fighter of the
month for March 2003, Naquana is going to fight every week this
month. She just accomplished one week, the next will be in
Oshkosh, WI at the
Eagles Club March 15, then Milwaukee, WI at the Rave March 22 and
finally in
Janesville,
WI in a feature Pro/Am event March 28.”

Bulgarian Galina Koleva Ivanova had a 10-round draw with
Maria Moroni, who was defending her GBU European
Featherweight Title. WBAN received notice that Moroni had been
ill, and did not fight up to par. Moroni said that she wants a
rematch in the near future.

Jamie Clampitt, 138, captured the vacant
Women’s EBA Super Lightweight title Friday night with a fourth round
knockout of Ragan Pudwill, 135, at the Christopher Columbus Center, in Boston’s
historic North End. Clampitt (9-2 3 KO’s), the former Calgary native, now
residing in Rhode Island, carved out a historic niche of her own in
garnering her first professional title over Pudwill (3-8-0) just 1:19 into
the round. The fight had been scheduled for eight rounds. Clampitt relied on
a flurry of hard body shots in the contest. The accumulation of which over
whelmed Pudwill, who fought for the WIBF Light Welterweight Title against
Agnieszka Rylik, in Budapest, Hungary back in May of 2002. Clampitt’s
belt-winning effort was realized when she capped a flurry midway through the
fourth round with a hard left to Pudwill’s mid section, dropping the Mandan
, ND native to one knee. "I felt that I had a lot more confidence coming
into this fight because I’ve never trained harder leading up to a fight,"
Clampitt said, moments after posing with her new fashion statement, namely
the WEBA belt. Clampitt credited her trainers Tiny Ricci, Chuck Sullivan and
JJ Jeanotte with a recent switch in tactics, one which puts greater emphasis
on working the her opponents gut. "I let myself do a lot of new things in
the ring tonight and it paid off. It all worked tonight," said the new

On an ESPN2 card (untelevised), Layla McCarter, 132,
fought Tracy Byrd, in their third time out with each other.
McCarter won her second split decision in a six-rounder.
McCarter and Byrd, just fought recently in Las Vegas that also
resulted in a split decision.
March 7, 2003 - Colorado Bell Hotel, in Laughlin, NV Stephanie Dobbs,
104, stopped her opponent, Gena Abel, 103, 1:19
in the third round in a 105-lb bout. Dobbs threw combinations
to the body and head, and BILV Mary Ann Owen said that she is really
coming along.

French who came with a very strong team. Side note about Galassi...
Galassi has accumulated over 30 amateur fights, and is an undefeated
two-time World champion, winning all of the AIBA International

Galina Koleva Ivanova had a 10-round draw with Maria Moroni,
who was defending her GBU European Featherweight Title.

Shelby Walker TKO2 Miranda Lynch of Indiana, in a
scheduled lightweight four-rounder. In a seconds women's match,
Tanisha Dunn, 201, (1-1) defeated Carley Pesente,
215, ( 3-5-1) by unanimous decision in a six round match. The final
judges scores were 60-54, 60-53 and 59-55. Both fighters scored
several hard shots and Dunn knocked Pesente to the canvas in the
first round. The fight was loudly cheered by the 1000 or so fans in
attendence and the bout was chosen as the "Fight of the Night."
March 1, 2003 - Las Vegas, Nevada
On the undercard of the Roy Jones Jr./Ruiz showdown, Vonda Ward,
179, fought a four-rounder on the undercard against Martha
Salazar, 230. According to WBAN's insider, Salazar rocked
Ward in the second round, and it was an action-packed fight. Ward
won by a split decision with Ward receiving 39-37 by two judges, and
Salazar scoring 39-37 with one judge. Ward, the IBA World
heavyweight champion remains undefeated at 16-0-0 (14 KO), and
Salazar is now 5-1-0 (0KO).
