May 30, 2001 Galdo's Night Club, Philadelphia, PA
Yolanda Gonzalez, 115, from New Jersey won a four-round unanimous decision against Jessica Flaharty.  Gonzalez is now 5-0 (3KO) and Flaharty dropped to 2-2-1 (2KO).  

May 30, 2001 Moscow, Russia
Olga Kokorina of Russia won a four-round decision over Natalya Ivanova, also of Russia. Super-lightweight division.   

May 27, 2001 Celebrity Theatre, Phoenix, Arizona
Bantamweight Brenda Herrera had her pro debut against Jessica Mohs, and won by a unanimous decision. Both fighters are from Phoenix.  Former Phoenix junior-flyweight champion Michael Carbajal worked the corner of Herrera.   Herrera is now 1-0-0, and Mohs fell to 1-2.  (

May 25, 2001 - Teachers Union Hall, Dorchester, Massachusetts
Mitzi Jeter retained her IWBF Welterweight belt when she defeated Dawne George with a unanimous decision in a ten- round title bout. Final scoring,  100- 90, 99-91, 99-91. WBAN's insider said that "It was a good fight even though the scores appears to be so far apart. Both fighters fought good." Jeter moved her record to 16-3-1 4KO's, and Dawne George dropped to 4-8-1, 3KO's).

May 25, 2001 Miami, Florida
Karla Redo  won a four-round unanimous decision against Sharice Gray of Bradenton, Forida.  Redo improved her record to 5-1 (3KO), and Gray fell to 1-2 (1KO.) This was in the welterweight division.  

May 25, 2001 Ciudad Juárez, Chihuahua, México
Gloria Kataneo of El Paso, Texas won a six-round unanimous decision over Imelda Arias of Juárez. This was a Lightweight division.

May 24, 2001 - Arrowhead Pond, Anaheim, CA
In a women's bantamweight bout, Bertha Gonzalez, 114, (3-3-1) of Panorama City handed Anaheim's Mary Duron, 113, (2-1) her first loss in a four-round split decision.

May 24, 2001 - Charleston, South Carolina
Another steady diet of inferior opponents for Melissa Salamone. Salamone took on 1-3 (Possibly Kemp stable) Kelly Jones, where she stopped her in the second round.  Jones is now 1-4. 

May 22, 2001- San Francisco, California
Susan Howard won a four-round majority decision against Bambi Bertoncello, 134. 

May 20, 2001- Fox Sports Net, Belterra, Indiana
Jessica Rakoczy, 134, defeated Vikki Clardy from Cincinnati, 131, with a unanimous decision in a six-rounder. No knockdowns, final scoring 60-54. Rokoczy improves her record to 5-0 (2KO), and Clardy drops to 2-1. In a second bout, Freeda Foreman, 160, won by a unanimous decision over 0-1 boxer Audrey LaTorre, 154.  Final scoring by judges 60-54. Foreman improves her record 5-0 (3KO), and Audrey remains without a win on her pro record 0-2.    All boxers are new on the scene and are blessed to be able to make T.V. that only experienced women boxers with extensive boxing backgrounds would dream of....  (

May 20, 2001 - Fantasy Springs Casino, Indio
California - Telemundo, Promoted by America Presents
Marilyn Salcido who trains out of Big Bear, California, won a four-round unanimous decision against Jessica Mohs from Chandler, Arizona, Mary Ann Owen said, "Salcido had the superior boxing skills and was is very good condition, Moh had a lot of heart. Both gals put on a very exciting four-round boxing show, the fans were cheering."  Salcido improved her record to 3-2-1 (1 KO), and Mohs dropped to 1-1. 

May 19, 2001 - Vienna, Austria
Esther Schouten of Holland won a close unanimous decision against Sanna Rauta for the vacant WIBF European Super - Bantamweight title, in what was reported on the Mr. Boxing website as a " fantastic and hard fought fight which was probably the best female fight ever to be seen on a European ring. It would have left a lot of men boxers and people opposed to female boxing red faced if they had witnessed it! The Rauta team was unhappy with the result as they thought that Sanna deserved better for her efforts but they took the verdict very sportingly. There was a lot of media attention from newspapers and magazines from both Holland and Sweden."  Final scoring was 94-97, 95-97, 97-95.  Also, Super bantamweight: Kristina Krek of Hungary KO1 Anca Luminita of Rumania; In the  Bantamweight division,  Diana Szilagyi of Hungary KO2 Laura Tudorache of Rumania. 

May 19, 2001 - Panama
In front of a "Sellout" crowd, "southpaw"  Ana Pascal from Colon, Panama, won a 10-round unanimous decision against Colombian Liliana Palmera to capture the  WIBA (140-lb) Jr. Welterweight World championship.  Pascal's Record improved to  8-0-1 (3 KO's). 

May 19, 2001 -Sky Ute Casino,  Ignacsio, Colorado
In the IFBA Featherweight championship bout between reigning IFBA Featherweight Champion Layla McCarter, 123.5, and challenger Jo Jo Wyman, 124.5, resulted in a draw.  The Judges scored it  97-93 McCarter, 98-92 Wyman and 95-/95 for the Draw. Both fighters were evenly matched, with the momentum of the fight changing hands round by round. An accidental headbutt in the fourth round temporarily stopped the action, but both fighters were able to continue. Another female bout on the card:  Tracy Byrd, 129 1/4, of Flint, MI captured the IFBA Intercontinental Jr. Lightweight Championship with a unanimous Decision over Brenda Vickers, 129,  of Tampa, Florida. The Judges scored the bout 98-92, 100-90 and 97-93 all in favor of the new Intercontinental champion. Byrd showed remarkable skill after a nearly 18 moth layoff. Byrd used her right to punish Vickers to the body with Vickers depending on her jab to keep Byrd away.   Reports from the Sky Ute Casino said both fights were entertaining, and as always the women received standing ovations throughout the night. 

May 19, 2001 - Calgary, Canada
Jamie Clampitt, of Toronto, Canada,  won a four-round unanimous decision over Brenda Bell Drexel of Texas.  

May 18, 2001- Warsaw, Poland
Edyta Olewniczak of Poland KO2  Valéri Rangheard of France, for the the WIBF Intercontinental Featherweight title. Edyta improved her record to 7-0 (2 KO).

May 17, 2001 - Irish Centre, Leeds, England
Michelle Sutcliffe defeated Marietta Ivanova when Ivanova was stopped 1:56 of the fifth round.  Sutcliffe was fighting Ivanova for the vacant  IFBA Flyweight Title. Michelle of Leeds, England becomes the first IFBA Champion crowned in Europe.  

May 16, 2001 - Kansas City, Missouri
Vonda Ward TKO2 Carley Pesente.   Pesente was knocked down twice before the fight was stopped.  Ward is now 12-0 (12KO), and Pesente has fallen to 0-2.

May 15, 2001 - Honolulu, Hawaii-Televised on ESPN2
IFBA Jr. Middleweight Championship bout. Ann Wolfe of Austin, Texas, 153 1/4, won a 10-round unanimous decision against Vienna Williams, 150 3/4,  of Philadelphia, PA.   Wolfe became the new Jr. Middleweight champion.  Wolfe improved her record to 8-1-0 (5KO), and Williams received her first loss as a professional, and is now 5-1-0 (2KO).  (

May 13, 2001 - Wendover, UT-Univision
Mia St. John  won a four-round unanimous decision against Linda Tenberg.  final scoring 39-37, 39-37, 40-36.

May 13, 2001, Barcelona, Spain
Agatha Gracia defeated Loli Muñoz with a four-round unanimous decision.

May 12, 2001 - Madison Square Garden, New York
Christy Martin won a ten-round majority decision against Kathy Collins. Final scoring was 95-95, 97-93, 98-92. Martin moves her record to 43-2-2 (31 KO), and Collins record dropped to 14-2-1 (3KO).  Judge Frank Lombardi scored the fight a draw, 95-95, while Tom Kaczmarek had it 97-93 for Martin. Judge Larry Hazzard Jr. scored it 98-92 for Martin.

May 12, 2001 - Johnson City, Tennessee
Melissa Salamone won the 135lb. Woman's WBF Belt by winning an  unanimous decision over Jovette Jackson in front of a sell-out crowd on Andy Zulewski's Power Promotion Card in Johnson City, Tenn. (

May 12, 2001 - Spain
María José Rosa defeated Timea Dencsi by a four-round decision in a Flyweight division. Rosa moved her record to 7-0. Dencsi dropped to 0-1. Also, Estibaliz Cano won by TKO Noelia Fernández.  Cano improved her record to 1-1.

May 12, 2001 Biloxi, Mississippi
Deanna Nance (Strawweight) of Oklahoma won a four-round unanimous (39-37) decision over Stephanie Poole of Springfield, Missouri. Nance improved her record to 4-3.

May 11, 2001 -Tulsa, Oklahoma
Sumya Anani (16-1-0 6KO) defeated Liz Mueller (5-2-0 2KO) with a unanimous 10-round decision and is the new I35-lb IBA World Champion.  Final scoring was 96-94, 98-92, and 99-91, all for Anani.

May 11, 2001 -Quiet Canyon, in Montebello, California 
Mariana Juarez TKO3 Sue Chase (4 rounds at 118). Juarez's pro debut in the United States.  Vince Caruso, who spoke with Marco Barrera, said on the Boxing Rumble Forum, "According to the champ (Berrera), Mariana used a vicious blend of uppercuts and body shots to make Sue Chase keel over in pain, thus forcing the stoppage. And those who know the iron horse Chase, have seen her take all shots from Christy Martin right on down." Also, Marco told Vince that  Mariana was mobbed by the crowd after the fight more than he was when he defeated Prince Naseem Hamed. (
May 11, 2001 -Sequoia Conference Center, Buena Park, California
On the undercard of an all-Muay Thai event, Claudia Vidaurri won a 3-round match by unanimous decision over Michelle Zambrana. The scheduled co-main event, a 5-round match for the vacant UWMTA women's lightweight championship was cancelled due to  Marlowe McCray's opponent not showing up.  McCray became the champion by default.  Apparently McCray's scheduled opponent, Lissete Pelayo, called the promoter the night before to pull out of the match. This was disappointing, not only to the audience, but to Ms. McCray, who had been training very hard for the last three months in preparation for the fight.  Also on the undercard, in a 3-round match between two intermediate level fighters, Mia Madison won by unanimous decision over a late substitute for her scheduled opponent.  CraigO, who covered the fight said, "I have to add that a couple of the men's matches were spectacular and incredibly intense, namely Paul Rivas vs. Chrisostomo(?), who was substituting for Rivas' original opponent), and Jack Thames vs Henry Cho for the middleweight championship. This wasn't one of those nights when the women put on better fights than the men, even to an admittedly partial observer."  The card was put on by Vut Kamnark and was well- attended by a very enthusiastic crowd.   Among those in attendance: Benny "the Jet" Urquidez, who had one of the fighters under his tutelage in the main event.  Also, Casey Noland, a woman no-holds-barred fighter who was part of a contingent from the San Luis Obispo Kickboxing School to cheer on one of their fighters, Mr. Cho, in his bone-crunching victory over Mr. Thames.  Report submitted by Craigo, May 12, 2001

May 8, 2001  East St. Louis, Illinois
Leatitia Robinson of Chicago, and a 2000 USA Boxing national 165-lb champion,  TKO1 Theresa Oprysk of Indiana, (Super-welterweight). Robinson improved her record to 2-0 (2KO).

May 8, 2001, IC Light Amphitheater, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania (ESPN2 Tuesday Night Fights)
It was Angelee "Madd Dog" Gardner versus Amy "Red Dog" Burton in a welterweight dogfight tonight at the IC Light Amphitheater in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. This four-rounder was the third fight in the inaugural boxing card presented on ESPN2's Tuesday Night Fights.  Burton (3-1-1) proved to be too technically proficient against late-replacement Gardner (1-1) and the match was stopped at 1:40 of round four, with Burton taking the TKO victory. Gardner was game but somewhat overweight and under-trained. (Taken off Boxing rumble Forum board)

Kelsey Jeffries won a four-round unanimous decision against Yvonne Trevino in Phoenix, Arizona, at the Celebrity Theatre.  According to news sources, Trevino was knocked down twice.

May 6, 2001, Ontario, Canada - ISKA (Full Contact) Title fight
In the 10-round main event, at the Memorial Gardens, North Bay (Ontario, Canada), Chantal Nadon defeated Mary Hart by unanimous decision for the ISKA flyweight (Full Contact) title. 

May 5, 2001, All-Female Amateur Boxing Tournament, Pennsylvania
PENNSYLVANIA (May 6) Last night we held our first ever "all female" Amateur Boxing Tournament. The idea behind this tournament is to give female boxers in our area a fun and unique way to compete.
