- Sky Ute Casino, in Ignacio, Colorado Adriana Delgado,
of Albuquerque, New Mexico, won a unanimous decision over
Canadian Kathy Williams for the vacant IFBA 118-lb
Bantamweight title fight. According to the Durango Herald,
Williams who was a bit taller than Delgado used her
long-distance jab against Delgado throughout the fight. In the
third round Delgado rocked Williams back with an overhand right,
and then followed it up with a flurry of combinations. In the
eighth round Williams came out with her barrage of combinations.
Final scoring was 97-93, 97-93, and 97-94.

There were two women’s bouts on a card of five scheduled
matches. The first match featured seasoned veteran Mitzi
Jeter. Jeter, 150.5, won a hard fought six-rounder over
Bonnie Mann, 151. The two had several clashes of the heads
throughout the fight. Mann told WBAN that although she did not
win the bout, that for her it was still a victory to go the
distance in her first six-round bout, against an experienced
boxer. Mann said, “I want to take on the best and have a
benchmark from which I can improve and fine tune my training to
become even better. So for others who are out there who may not
have the best records in the world....don't worry about it. Just
keep training and learn from every fight.” In the second
women’s match, Chevelle Hallback won a six-round
unanimous decision over Britt VanBuskirk. Hallback
displayed this night her technical skills and dominated the
fight. Britt was game and hung in there until the end.

Patricia Martinez, Miami, now 12-1 (5KO), stopped Yahaira
Bonilla, Puerto Rico, now 2-1-1, in the second round of a
scheduled Flyweight six-round bout. In the Sun-Sentinel the
reported the following: "In the only women's bout, Miami
flyweight Patricia Martinez knocked out Yahaira Bonilla of
Puerto Rico with a straight right 1:44 into the second round.
Martinez, the 1997 national amateur champion and top-ranked
boxer in the WIBA junior-flyweight rankings, has won her past
nine fights."

Association Stadium, Auckland, New Zealand
Heavyweight Lisa-Marie Vizaniari, 218, Gold Coast,
Queensland, Australia won an eight-round unanimous decision over
Ali Dutt, 295, New Zealand, who was making her pro debut.
According to news sources, Vizaniari controlled the fight
with good technical skills. Dutt was game but out-classed.
Vizaniari remains undefeated with a 3-0-0 (2KO).

Valanna McGee, 131, of Sacramento, won a four round
unanimous decision over Nicole Beard, 138, of San
Francisco. McGee improved her record to 1-1-0 (0KO), and Beard

Heavyweights Martha Salazar (6-1-243lbs) again used her
extreme power to defeat a game Carley Pesente
(3-6-1-220lbs) before a small crowd of 300 in Vallejo, CA. Both
sides came out throwing thunderous shots and it looked like a
rerun of their first two fights as the two fighters fought toe
to toe for most of the first round. In the second Pesente
cornered Salazar and appeared to be making a spirited effort to
finish off Martha when something clicked and Salazar rattled off
at least eight straight rights to Pesente's head. Pesente was
hurt , but finished out the round. Returning to her corner her
managers realized that it was not her night and threw in the
towel.

First Women’s’ English National Amateur Boxing Championships
A grey sky formed
the back drop to the large grey concrete box of a building called the
Croft Gymnasium at The Metropolitan Police College, Hendon, London, last
Saturday afternoon. Not the most salubrious
setting for a little bit of history.
Inside, 250 friends, families and supporters had gathered to
watch 15 pioneering sporty young women punch each other in pursuit of
their sporting goals.

Mary Jo Sanders, Detroit, Michigan, won a
four-round unanimous decision over Terri Blair,
Louisville, Kentucky. The bout was in the Junior Welterweight
Division. One boxing fan wrote into WBAN and said, "Based upon
Mary Jo Sanders' display of boxing that night at Gray's Armory,
it's hard to believe that was only her second professional
fight. Keep an eye on this one!" Sanders remains undefeated with
a 2-0-0 (1KO) records, and Blair is now 2-4 (0KO).

she is ready to compete at any time. She was motivated even
more just fighting close to home in the Region, with all of her
family and friends watching."

5-4-0 (1KO), won a four-round unanimous decision over New York's
Dee Hamaguchi, now 0-4-2, in a in the strawweight
division on the undercard.

Anita Christensen, Denmark, won a six-round unanimous decision over
Daniela Graff, of Karlsruhe, Germany in a Bantamweight division.

Jane Couch, of Fleetwood, England, defeated Larisa Berezenko of the
Ukraine on points in a competitive fight. Berezenko had all the
awkwardness of an experienced kick-boxer. Couch showed the more
polished skills and held on to a quickly established lead to win
by 78-75 points despite a last round onslaught by tough girl Larisa. It was a competitive contest enjoyed by a good
crowd who showed their appreciation of both boxers with loud
applause. Couch is now 20-4-0 (8 KO).

European Championship. In what is the first time for the
Italian team to participate, on May 11, Norwegian Henriette
B. Kitel defeated Antonella Bellandi, Italy, (10-18)
in cat. - 57kg. One month ago Bellandi had defeated Kitel in the
Torneo Italia. On May 12, - Marzia Davide defeated
Turkish Aygun Seda Duygu (11 - 7) in cat. - 54kg. Marzia,
22 years old, last year became vice world champion. Marzia is in
semifinal (bronze medal). She is the first Italian woman to win
an European medal ... but we hope in a gold!

Daisy Lang won a majority decision in a 10-round GBU
Super-Bantamweight Title fight over Silke Weickenmeier in
a rematch for the two. In what was considered a controversial
decision, the final judging was 95-95 (draw), 96-94 (Lang),
96-94 (Lang). What was to be televised on ZDF, ended up showing
only the first two rounds and the last round. Of what was shown
there was a lot of in-close fighting and holding. Both boxers
had apparently received a cut from accidental headbutts. Daisy
had a swollen nose, and Silke had a cut above her left eye. Lang
is now 17-1-1 (6KO), and Silke is now 14-4-3 (0KO).

Mary Lehman, 118 1/4, won a four-round unanimous
decision over Rita
Valentini, 118 1/4, in a rematch. The first
time these two fought was January 31, 2003, which resulted in a
majority decision. In this fight it was considered
by many to be the
“fight of the night” and was a toe-to-toe battle
between these two. Unlike the first time Lehman fought
Rita, where Rita used her movement and boxing skills---this time
around she came to brawl! In the opening round, Rita came in rushing at Lehman rocked Lehman.
but Lehman had a answer to Rita's attack and came out the
winner. Final Scoring was 40-36, 40-36, 39-37. Lehman is now
5-0-0, and Rita fell to 2-3.

TKO'd Gloria Hankins, a boxer making her pro debut and
displayed little skills.... Valenciana moved her record to
4-0-0. AND in another women's bout,
Nevada, Lisa Pederson picks up her first win as a pro
when she wins by a four-round unanimous decision over Jessica Mohs.
Pederson improved her record to 1-1-1, and Mohs is now 5-9-0
(1KO).

Center in Sanford, North Carolina
Carrie Flock, 149, won a four-round controversial split
decision over Dana Dalton, 151. All judges scored
the fight 39-37, and when the decision was read the crowd boo'd
the decision. Even though Dalton's team felt that they had
won the fight, Dana said in a post fight comment, "I didn't do
enough to win the fight in two of the judges opinion so I will
train harder and there will be a rematch." Bonnie Mann,
a pro boxer who was at the fight, said that the crowd went
"crazy" during the women's bout. Mann went on to say,
"Carrie showed good technical boxing skill while Dana was the
initial aggressor coming straight from the corner to Carrie's
corner and started to brawl right away which seemed to be
uncomfortable for Carrie. Carrie settled down and began to box
and from there the two had many excellent exchanges throughout
the fight. At the end of their fight the crowd was
standing!" Flock is now 4-1-0, and Dalton is 1-2-0 (1KO).
Lastly, it looks like North Carolina has officially adopted two
minute rounds for women.

Sunshine Fettkether stopped Kitty "Bad Kitty" pugh
22 seconds into the fifth round. News sources
reported that Pugh was dazed "repeatedly." Pugh came
into the fight with an undefeated record, and is now 3-1-0.
May 8, 2003 - Adam's Mark Hotel - Black Tie Charity Fight Night
- Tulsa, Oklahoma
Franchesca Alcanter won a controversial four-round
majority decision over Mercedes Mercury. According to
WBAN's insider Franchesca got off to a slow start and was not
how to tackle her first southpaw. Mercedes came out ready to
fight throwing only 1-2 combinations. Alcanter was the aggressor
throwing to the body but not able to work her jab well but
connecting with hard straight rights left hooks and over hand
rights and left hooks.

super-featherweight bout on the undercard, Blanca Luna
won a close four-round majority decision over Jackie Nava.

Bridgett “Baby Doll” Riley, a Five-Time Kickboxing World Champion,
Former Boxing Bantamweight World Champion, ranked #7 to #4 in the world in
three prominent federations, sporting a 14-3-0
record, fought Nicole Gallegos, who came into the
fight with a 0-2-1 (unverified 1-2-1) record. Riley stopped Gallegos :58
in the third round.

only women's bout, 2002 world champion and WBAN's past
Fighter of the month Naquana Smalls of the Peshtigo
Boxing Club beat Melinda Torres of the North Shore Boxing
Club at 138 pounds.

Missy "The Fury" Fiorentino of Cranston, Rhode Island, won
by a unanimous decision over Brenda Bell Drexel of San
Marcos, Texas in a four-round junior welterweight bout. All

Drexel is 5-18-2.
