October 26, 2001 - Gulfport, Mississippi
Vickie Woods, 150, Chattanooga, Tennessee, had a draw with Jeanne
Martinez, 150, of Slidell, Louisiana. Report by Larry Haik:
I had the pleasure of working the corner for Vickie Woods. Vickie has fought some of the toughest
women out there and always brings a fight. For not sparring prior to this
bout, not having a fight for about a year, in addition to taking the fight
on short notice, she put on a fantastic performance. I have nothing but
respect for Vickie. Arriving alone to fight a home town favorite, with a
cornerman she has been in the opponents' corner too three times in the
past---IT TOOK COURAGE! The bright side of this is that she was not dealt a
loss but a draw. Vickie knocked Jeanne Martinez down in the first round, where
Martinez received a ten count, and saved by the bell. Woods also had her in
trouble in the second round (in the corner - defenseless) again saved by the
bell. Woods backed Jeanne up the entire fight and followed directions well.
Jeanne had two other times that landed her on the canvas but were not called
knockdowns and were slips. Final scoring was 59-57 Woods, 57-56 Martinez,
and 57-57 for a draw. Congratulations on your victory Vickie Woods! From
LA-41 Boxing Gym's, Southern Prizefighter Boxing Team. Coach, Larry Haik (Haik
has been Martinez’ trainer in the past). Martinez is now 13-5-3 (4KO), and
Woods is now 10-10-2 (6KO).
